Fort Wallace... Why?
No spoilers please.

There's a red circle where Fort Wallace is on the map. Why? Going there just has some soldiers who tell me to go away. If I shoot them, I lose honour. I don't understand why it's marked like that. I assumed it was a gang to take out or something.

It's a military Fortress? You can't be this stupid dude.

Yea. Even in the old days armed citizens aren't allowed in Military Outposts and killing soldiers is generally frowned upon.

That doesn't mean you won't 'infiltrate' that location at a later time... Many folks you meet - you could use later - unless they're dead. Your actions do have consequences.

Not everyone must be killed and looted. In fact, sometimes the game is rather insistent on it. If you want to remain 'Honorable' you may want to leave some people you meet alive and unlooted. There's a reward for that:

Get one of those and then you can go 'Full Heathen' - and get it's evil counterpart for the other Cattleman (probably easier to go 'Heathen' First - you get double Honor bonuses in Chapter 6 for your, you know; 'Redemption'..lol).

"But I have to Kill and loot to earn a living"...
1 Steelhead or Sockeye is worth $5.34 in St. Denis. If you upgrade your satchel you can carry 99 of each. Do the math.

There are literally 10s of Thousands of Dollars laying around just waiting for you to find it and pick it up. Treasure. There are 4 Gold Bars in easy ride distance from Horseshoe Overlook (Chapter 2) and those aren't even Treasure. Let's call it Free Gold 'cause that's what it is.

Look just beyond the headshot to that lady you want to rob and you'll see there's a different game out there... play some of it...

:D

So? I'm not asking why it's hostile and I lose honour for shooting them, I'm wondering what the gameplay purpose is of showcasing it. It's the only place marked on the map so far with a red circle, and I hadn't even been around there yet. If there's nothing to do there except shoot a bunch of innocents, just as with towns and other settlements, then why mark it on the map as if there's something specific to do, with a red that usually indicates enemies?

Thanks but this wasn't really my question. I'm playing as an honourable cowboy as much as the game will permit me. I loaded a save as soon as I realised I shot at military.

Then you answered your own question and you're on a good path...
If you can Manually Save The Game - you've gone right past 85% of the people playing this game - miserably - relying on Autosave.

You have the option to screw up royally - then go back for a 'Do-Over' or 'Don't-Do-Over.

Congratulations.

"I wonder if there's an albino cougar in there?"
Save Game
"Yep!"
Load Game...
"C'mere, you pale piece of hairy crap..."
Load Game
"OK, that didn't work... how 'bout THIS!"

The red circle means you will be killed on sight if you go there. You will see another area with a red circle later on in the east. Both areas will kill you even if you haven't been aggressive.

Necro'd from 2022.

Fort Wallace becomes important to the story later. Enough said.
