That doesn't mean you won't 'infiltrate' that location at a later time... Many folks you meet - you could use later - unless they're dead. Your actions do have consequences.
Not everyone must be killed and looted. In fact, sometimes the game is rather insistent on it. If you want to remain 'Honorable' you may want to leave some people you meet alive and unlooted. There's a reward for that:

Get one of those and then you can go 'Full Heathen' - and get it's evil counterpart for the other Cattleman (probably easier to go 'Heathen' First - you get double Honor bonuses in Chapter 6 for your, you know; 'Redemption'..lol).
"But I have to Kill and loot to earn a living"...
1 Steelhead or Sockeye is worth $5.34 in St. Denis. If you upgrade your satchel you can carry 99 of each. Do the math.
There are literally 10s of Thousands of Dollars laying around just waiting for you to find it and pick it up. Treasure. There are 4 Gold Bars in easy ride distance from Horseshoe Overlook (Chapter 2) and those aren't even Treasure. Let's call it Free Gold 'cause that's what it is.

:D
If you can Manually Save The Game - you've gone right past 85% of the people playing this game - miserably - relying on Autosave.
You have the option to screw up royally - then go back for a 'Do-Over' or 'Don't-Do-Over.
Congratulations.
"I wonder if there's an albino cougar in there?"

"OK, that didn't work... how 'bout THIS!"

Fort Wallace becomes important to the story later. Enough said.
