Perfect Fox Pelt
They start off as 3 star but I'm losing a star somehow. I've shot 3 star foxes with carbine repeater, lancaster repeater, springfield, bolt action, and varmint rifles. I've tried using regular, express, split point, and high velocity ammos, except of course in the varmint rifle. Initially I always targeted the neck. But for the foxes, because of my issue, and in attempt to figure this out; I have been targeting the front in the the chest or if aiming at the side of the body I target the area where the lungs and heart would be. With the exception of the varmint rifle I'm getting one shot kills everytime. But when I get to the killm they're no longer three star. This is not happening to me with other animals in game. The varmint rifle just scares them off no matter where I hit them. Should I be doing headshots? Is this a bug?

Yes, shoot to the head. One shot kill. And use springfield for foxes.

Yes, shoot in Head. No, do not use a Hunting Rifle (like Springfield)

For a Fox, use a Repeater with Regular Ammo.

And you must shoot in the head (or neck) to not damage the pelt, for all animals

These ign guides are useless. Same as repeaters for hunting. If animal doesn't die in one headshot of varmint then you use a rifle, springfield being best choice, if it doesn't die one headshot from springfield, use carcano or rolling block. Bow is another choice for medium-big animals, ofc except largest ones.

You can't rely on The Buck Trinket if you don't have it, and if you use the correct weapon you don't need it.

Story. Repeater. Headshot.
Online. Rifle/Regular Arrow. Headshot

Express Ammo in firearms.

Thousands of hours. Hundreds of perfect Fox Pelts.

Facts, not quesswork.

Alright. I'll try headshots. It's weird though. I take down bison, bear, elk, and many others with neck shots and get perfect pelts. But the creature a little bigger than a housecat requires headshots. lol

Thanks

Yes that is another factor; if you are going to look at guides, they need to be in-depth and accurate. The rules for many things like hunting differ between Story vs Online.

When your Dead Eye upgrades fully - you'll see 'The Bullseye'.
None of them are neck shots (or they're too small for me to see).

When hunting for a perfect pelt - you don't want to damage the pelt. A Fox's Neck is half the pelt. I aim right behind it's nose or in it's eyeball.

It's just that I've harvested perfect coyote and raccoon pelts (fox is in between them in size) by shooting those in the neck. Again, most of the perfect pelts I've gathered is from neck shooting the animal. I think it dates back to being taught by Charles to shoot for the neck when he took me bow hunting. The real small ones like rabbits, squirrel, badger, beaver I've harvested perfect pelts without aiming for any specific point of ther body. *shrugs*

Of course now that I'm going to try head shotting a fox, I'm over an hour into my gaming session and I haven't seen one yet. Go figure. :)

Wait until you need a Moose.
You'll be trampled by 10 of them - until you need to put a perfect one on the horse, then they go Extinct...

;)

The Bow is a different animal apparently.
Online I can take a neck shot on a Buck/Deer without worry.

Charles was impressed when I downed a Bison with an Improved Arrow on that hunt. I was pleased to have his approval.

It was a clean shot to the Forehead.
I could see the point sticking out it's ass, but couldn't recover the arrow...

:)

I got loads of 3 star fox belts with the rolling back rifle. Even though they aren't that large, it seems the sniper rifle is meant for them. I took down one 3 star just a few hours ago. Foxes are pretty easy to hunt.

Online, yes - me too.
Busted one with a Rolling Block (from at least 200 yards) and threw it's perfect carcass across Cripps' Table.

In Story the pelt would have been annihilated<---it would have looked like that Halloween Monster that turns itself inside out on your front lawn (next to the tiny Milky Way Bars).
