So everytime i use HDR and exit the game my windows HDR settings has changes, HDR is still on in windows but it A LOT darker than normal so in order to fix it i have to go and toggle off and on. Anyone know why?

Switching from windowed borderless to fullscreen fixed it for me.
I had the same issue, I kept enabling HDR in windows settings but every time the Red Dead Redemption window received focus the HDR toggle would instantly get disabled.

The colors of the steam overlay appear very broken but the game seems fine now.

Only use Fullscreen.

Hmm ok yeah scratch that, hdr on Red Dead redemption has been an absolute ****show for me. The full screen setting randomly changes across restarts, and so does the hdr setting. The game frequently crashes when changing settings, sometimes even while booting the game.
The hdr calibration screen is also really confusing. The results are sometimes completely different even though the settings are the same, and the rockstar logo is almost never visible. The brightness in the preview picture is often completely blown out, even though it looks fine in game.

Sometimes hdr does work and when it does, it looks so much better than sdr. Not only that, the game is much more clear during the night. Which makes this much worse because now I know what I’m missing.

I’ve had a bit more luck by changing the refresh rate from 120hz to 60hz. But overall it’s still pretty unstable. I guess HDR + 4K + 120hz is just too much data for either the cable, the game or Windows.
