nokota is a race type horse it will have slightly higher speed and acceleration than the mustang which is a utility war/work horse and will have slightly higher health and stamina than the nokota. Overall it doesn't really matter and I would just choose which one I like the most in how it looks. Edit: I should add that out of those I prefer the nokota, I just like how it looks over the mustang.

I always go for higher stamina.

Speed on the horse matters very little in the game, even when running from the law.

Stamina matters way more, and the Mustang looks like a solid, tough horse.

But i agree that the Nokota is a better looking horse

My preference is an Appaloosa - especially the Few Spotted Appaloosa

The Appaloosa has a great shape and is not the "my little pony" size of Nokotas and Arabians

Edit: of course, my favorite free horse is from "Arcadia for Amateurs III" - the SIlver Dapple Pinto (a Missouri Fox Trotter). It's really hard and took me many tries to get it right.

I do have a slight bias towards the Mustang though since it was one of the first I caught & you know... the name "Mustang" rings nicely

Neither.

One is a race horse you don't need. The other is R*'s idea of what a sleek quarter horse is supposed to be (although some can have Clodhopper attributes) and both are too short to be much good when Hunting as you'll get a better angle on smaller critters from higher up - i.e. get a tall horse - 14 hands and above works fine.

Note: 14 hands means the saddle is about at the height of the brim of Arthur's Hat. I like 'em over the crown. Real Men ride Tall Horses. John Wayne rode Ponies 'cause it made him look ridiculous with his feet dragging the ground - like you do on an Arabian.

mustang is the best horse, klodgoobers are really good too , i just got a paint and it seems pretty good so far, every breed in the game has it's pluses and minus's , to me speed isnt the most important, hi health and stamina are, also the mustangs and klod i have are pretty calm and seem to have a pretty high freak out threshold and good agility

I ride a slow-ass Hungarian sometimes myself, but if you whizz by Chapter 3's opportunity to Steal a Dark Bay Turk from the Braithwaites - you'll wish you hadn't.

Speed/Health/Stamina - and a Braithwaite Brand on it's ass make it 'Marvelous'...:

Up until about 15 minutes ago I would've said Nokota. I have a blue roan at lvl 4 bonding. She's fast and I thought not too skittish. But she just lost her $#1t on me when 4 wolves were upon us up by O' Creagh's Run. Now I get that it's 4 wolves and she's a prey animal. She's handled herself well before near cougars and bears. But this time we weren't even surrounded, we were already running, and they were all well behind us. But instead of increasing speed as I spurred her on, she instead chose to slow down and rear, allowing the wolves to catch up, and nearly bucking me off in the middle of them. So for me the Nokota gotta go. I'm looking for a war horse now.

That Dark Bay (or any) Turkoman has NEVER - in 3000 hours of game - Story or Online - tossed me off in the presence of Wolves and we've mixed it up with an 8-Pack on many occasions.

He gets up on his hind legs (and the Wolves go: My God, Boys! - What Now?), I either kill them all or open a hole for our escape.

My Hungarian tossed me yesterday when 3 surrounded us - he's a War Horse (that apparently doesn't like Wolves). He did curb-stomp one to death right before he tossed me - the thing is as big as a house, so there's that I suppose.

Just sayin'....

All horse behavior around animals is programmed to be the same - there is no "brave" factor beyond Bonding level.

With that said, there have been circumstances for me that seem almost identical and i will get 2 very different behaviors from 2 different horses.

It's seems like a puzzle, but since i have become rather static in my horse selection, i have been in near-identical situations more than a few times and my single horse has shown a large range of behaviors.

One Youtube guy did a complete analysis and showed what matters most is the initial "howl" or "Growl" and how close that happens to your horse (and which way your horse is facing).

So, while considering that piece of information, i did start to notice differences in situations that looked identical, with the same horse.

I do understand that from a role-play perspective it can be fun to blame the horse, and swap (or even shoot) the horse as a result of it failing to meet your needs.

But there is actually no difference in "Bravery" between horses, it's only Bonding level and circumstance.

In a previous play through I found a Brindle Thoroughbred just standing by itself near the four way intersection east of Horseshoe Overlook. Nobody around. No dead bodies that I could see. Just standing there like she was waiting for me. She was fast, controllable, good stamina. Plus - and I get that this is probably not programmed in - but whenever we were in a runnin n gunnin situation, I could focus on the gunnin part, while she seemed to make sure to run and avoid obstacles. She was a great horse up until chpt 6. Then it was like the effect was switched off. Quite often while I would be defending us from wolves, bounty hunters, the law, enemy gangs, she would run us into trees, boulders, and even off a dang cliff at full tilt, and at THE WORST possible times! So I set her free and started riding Buell.

This is so true. I've also seen the you tube videos about horse bravery is a myth.
I've seen so many posts saying some horse is braver than another this is not true as a hidden stat or otherwise. A horse can seem brave sometimes and freak out other times no matter breed or gender they all behave the same. How quickly you calm them and how full their cores are can make them less likely to freak out.

And a war horse is not braver, a war horse just has higher health that puts it in the war category.
