I killed him back in the day while playing on PS4 before it being released on PC. Now I thought of paying him a visit. The thing is that I'm on chapter 6 now. I went to his home and he wasn't there by the porch. And his home was opened. Nothing much inside. Is his presence in the world tied to something specific?

If you visit and don;t go in after he invites you, he will close the door and that's that. He'll mutter as you try to get in and walk around his shack. Maybe you passed by and didn't realize you chance was then there and only then.
