Note:
Manual Saves = Good
Autosave = Bad
Oof... That's dumb, but so is the medal system. Welp, since I'm gonna have to replay the entire game anyway just to get the gold medals, I might as well restart the whole damn thing once I finish the story for the first time.
But why no autosave? If you don't say no to these "optional" side quests, autosave or not wouldn't make any difference, or would it?
Here's how I manually save:
BEFORE every Story Mission
AFTER every Story Mission - and then use that one as the Running Save (every 10 or 15 minutes) Until I get to the next Story Mission.
When the B4 Story Missions eat up all the slots - I start replacing them from the bottom of the list.
I also make a Save B4 triggering a Stranger Encounter, but since you don't know when they pop up (until playthrough 4 or 5) I can usually get back to before it by using the latest Running Save.
Autosave will screw the pooch.
The first time your horse dies and Autosave makes sure it stays dead - you'll figure out how precious Manual Saves are.
I restarted my Maiden Voyage - in Chapter 6 - when Autosave killed my horse permanently.
That was a bridge I simply could not cross....
;)
Oh, so that's just because of a horse dying? Oof. My horses never died, and if they do at some point, I'll just buy another one or break a wild one.
Well - the difference is - I suppose - I fall in love with my horse almost immediately.
I was sure: "We Loved Once and True" was in reference to me and my horse(s). Turns out it wasn't, but still....
;)
haha yeah. I love my bulky black war horse. It's like I'm above all the peasants on their scrawny little horses. But it's so slow! lol
Get ya one of these:

A tall horse is a wonderful thing. A Turkoman is a tall horse and also a Race/War Horse.
That particular horse is the Dark Bay you can 'steal' from the Braithwaites in Chapter 3. Sure you can buy one - same horse (different coat), but having that Braithwaite Brand on it's ass makes him one-of-a-kind...lol
Once that rascal stands up on his hind legs and lets you shoot an entire 6-pack of Wolves at it's feet - or leap over 4 of them getting the hell out of Dodge - you too will be in love with your horse.

:D
I know the horse.
It's a plow horse, Man.
But... ride the horse you like.
That's what I'm doin'...
After my first playthrough I mod the game and drop The Dark Bay Turk and The Silver Dapple Crapple (great horse - not a fan of the Coat) out of the sky 10 feet in front of me as soon as I get the Stable and the Brush - and those are my Horses for the game.
I do tame/ride/bond many horses and one of my favorites is a Tenn Walker. I also like The Hungarian Halfbred and that Perlino Andalusian at Brandywine Drop is another one of my Favs.
I protect them with Manual Saves.
Ain't nuthin' bad happenin' to my guys.
BTW:
Put a Trapper Saddle on it - you'll get two Speed Points.
Every little bit will help.
This is the woman at number 34 ain't it?
Tried it once, didn't like it.
That's what the woman at number 34 said, I've never been the same since.
Step 1
Get your horse downed and don't revive him.
Step 2
Go to a stable and saddle up another horse.
Done. As soon as that saddle that was on the downed horse is out of him, he gets deleted. And there goes $450 to the trash. LOL
PS.: you can only get a horse back by going to the stable when he is stuck in a montain but still alive.
I have lost a horse on the map (forgot about him and left him standing when I rode off on one I just tamed). The Horse Station at Camp can get him or any other back to you instantly.
Oh, yeah. Then that confirms it. It's the saddle that keeps him connected to you. Remove it and the horse is gone.
I haven't used another save, or done this kind of preemptively saving, in over a year. I just got back to RDR2 and my autosaving save was still there perfectly stored in the cloud. lol
But what I do with stupid games that are known to get their saves corrupted or that do not have Steam cloud support is to make a backup of the save I'm using.
