The origin of the treasure chest hack dates to that reason. R* noticed people were spawning chests to get $, but it wasn't exactly the dollars that made them change how it worked, it was that hackers were also getting gold from it and that's where R* loses money outside of the game. When R* loses money that's when they will fix something. The change they put in was a check to make sure chests were legitimate and if they came from an unknown source they immediately ban the person/terminated the account that was used to open the hacked chest.
Hackers have been using it to mess with new or unsuspecting players by spawning the chest infront them to trick them into opening it and getting them banned for a chest the unsuspecting player never spawned in. Thats where my issue lies.
I probably wouldnt open a bunch of chests these days now that I know, but most likely the majority of people have no clue, arent on forums, arent watching mass YouTube videos about RedDead etc...
I would say based on my personal experience this is probably something like a myth. Im sure it's happened, it can probably happen again, but it's obviously not guaranteed perma-ban.
50 Gold And 5000 Dolar
DId you get banned ?
Got this too but not at that high price.
Just got like 0.86 gold and between 100-200$

Direct quote from R* on the topic:
Question: If I open treasure chests that are spawned by illegal mod menus in Red Dead Online, will I receive an account suspension?
Answer: We are aware of some PC players using mod menus to spawn treasure chests and other items in Red Dead Online and are actively working to have these accounts banned. These actions are also targeted at accounts found to be repeatedly abusing this mechanic through opening chests at extraordinary rates.
Not worth risking it in my opinion, even with only opening a few, as someone mentioned free gold bars lose money for R*, so they have motivation to ban for this as opposed to the griefers who just screw with other people.
Rockstar knows if you're account has cheated currency, the tricky part is knowing if they'll take action against your account or not.
I've heard opening a cheated-chest once or twice probably won't land you in trouble, but any more than that and you're account has likely been flagged.
Rockstar doesn't issue bans immediately, instead they flag accounts and then during the next ban-wave all flagged accounts get banned.
A first-time ban results in your character getting deleted, and all progress being lost. You also wont be able to go online for 30 days.
A second ban is permanent.
Rockstar never forgives bans, no matter the circumstances.
If you believe your account has cheated currency on it, or were tricked into picking up cheated currency, Rockstar's Customer Support will help you get the cheated currency removed. it's important to reach out for help before your account gets banned, after the ban has been issued it's too late.
Now, for COMPLETE transparency, accounts getting banned for grabbing cheated gold were frequently reported on these forums back when the game first came out. Now though, you hardly ever hear about it. I don't know if Rockstar has eased off the ban-hammer, or if they've just stopped caring and don't look for cheated currency any more. either way, I wouldn't risk it. o_o
I really hate companies that punish players for the company's own incompetence, its a really bad look.
