If you're not carrying it - it's on the horse.
The more weapons you have - the more it's likely R* will jam one of them in your fist, loaded with regular ammo, on Story Missions and you have no idea when or what it'll be.
You can put them in your weapon locker - thinking that's a safe place - but, NOOOOO... R* will go to your weapon locker, pick the crappiest weapon in it, load it with regular ammo and make you carry it.
Sound like Fun? Well, it's not.
If there's a weapon laying on the ground, or available to pick up - I do NOT pick it up if I don't plan on having R* shove that thing in my loadout 'cause they WILL.
Miner's Hat is kept on the Horse - as are most things like that. As long as you put it on the Horse it'll stay on the horse - even if you get it knocked/shot off.
You can lose Melee Weapons - not sure how and not sure how to prevent it.
Same goes for every crap weapon laying on the ground. Pick up a "Worn Lancaster"? Guess what? You OWN a 'Worn Lancaster'. Enjoy.
I assume Gold Guns are Rare (and perhaps worth picking up). That doesn't mean I'll pick them up, but you can if you want to risk having to use it on a Story Mission.
Most people can't wait to replace their Cattleman. I Upgrade my Cattleman 'cause it's one of the best sidearms in the game. Draw just one and it has a fire rate almost equal to any (Pew-Pew) Pistol and reloads in the blink of an eye. Fully upgraded it almost has the range and damage of a Lancaster... I'll keep my Cattleman, thank you.
Most people 'Dual Wield' sidearms.
When you 'Dual Wield' Revolvers, you don't have a free hand to 'Fan The Hammer' crushing your fire rate. Do you need 'em both? I don't. I carry a Cattleman, then put a Hand Cannon for fun in the Offhand... just for Murphrees or other annoyances that need some Express Explosive Ammo.
You can run out of Dead Animal Space, but you can carry every weapon in the game.
The problem is - when you have them all on the horse - it gets to be a PITA finding one to use.
Yes - i was pleased when they introduced the "Weapons Locker" (which is accessed same as "Change Clothing").
The "Weapons Locker" allows you to stow weapons so they are not available in the selection wheel on your horse. Very useful for the 10 different pistols and various rifles and repeaters you may accumulate during the game - allowing you to make only your preferred weapons available on ur horse.
Unfortunately, the game will still now and then pop an undesired weapon into your hand at the start of a mission fight, (even one stowed in the Weapons Locker, and not on ur horse) - and load it with regular ammo as Juice points out- and make life that much more difficult ::facepalm::
So, be sure to upgrade (and clean) the weapons you find since the game may decide that's the one ur gonna use.
