Hopefully you have a previous save you can revert to, becuz i agree that's pretty bad.
I have successfully donated all sorts of "items" to the "contributions" box, including Gold Bars ($500), but i don't think i have ever donated a Gold Ingot ($300).
I was just doing another side thing where i found a gold ingot (followed sketched "map" in Roanoke Ridge), and the quest walkthrough did say Gold Ingot activities can be buggy - maybe this is another example? :/
early into chapter 2 tyou should come across a fence called Seamus in Emerald Ranch and this man will buy the goods of Arthur.
I always use Gold Bars - at least the ones at:
Sherriff's Office/Train Derailment
To upgrade Pearson/Camp at the start of Chapter 2, so I won't have to wait for The Fence to open later in the Chapter.
I can usually scrape together enough cash to get a Varmint Rifle, Springfield and Cattleman w/upgrades, but the camp is more money than I can muster that early. By the time I get The Fence Unlocked - the Satchel is already done and I'm working on Challenges.
(Chapter 2 is my favorite Chapter - I do lots of stuff from Horseshoe Overlook)
When you 'Donate' - don't 'Donate All' - or that's likely what will happen.
Also - learn to create a Manual Save - OFTEN.
Reloading one of those is way better than most anything 'Autosave' can do.
