RDR 1 - Finally playable from beginning to end on PC -
If you were living under a rock like my humble self, you might have missed that RDR is finally playable on PC.
Ive waited so long and it would always crash mid game for the last years.
But time went by, and were now able to play trough this entire masterpiece on XENIA. RPCS3 seems also to run much better compared to the last year but not near as good as the Xbox emu.
It makes you wonder how the devs of XENIA made that possible without the funds of the RPCS3-emulator team.
Hats off.

Camping/Grass issues seem to be fixed, at least for game version [5454082B]. Honestly, this looks much better than the GOTY version on the PS-store.

HD-Processing on Youtube takes forever. I guess youll able to watch the clips on 1440p and 4K in a week or something. -_-.....

Xenia : 4K presets - DX12 - FXAA maxed out - AVG. FPS : 52 [until end of game] - GPU bound - Github[github.com] -
https://youtu.be/A7GCt3vVqyo

RPCS3 : 4K presets upscaled [only 720p native possible] - VULKAN - FXAA maxed out - AVG. FPS : 35 [until mid-game] - CPU bound - Github[github.com]
https://youtu.be/RyeZVbn8NOY

You can easily get to 60-80 FPS on lower resolutions like 720p or 480p but it doesnt look too good. Just astonishing how a game which was build for and with 30 FPS can be pushed beyond its limits and its still working just fine.

Tested on :
5950X
6900XTXH
RPCS3 v0.0.21
Xenia 2022.04.28

edit : Added missing information.

edit II : Added AMD RSR clip - 1440p - FXAA balanced
AMD did a pretty good job with the implementation of the RSR feature. Textures still look crisp and youll get better performance. Even if your card doesnt support RSR, turning off FSR and using bilinear interpolation will gain more performance with a marginal cost of image quality.

You are welcome. I hope youll have as much fun as I had, playing this game again after a long time.
This franchise is truly worth every second of playtime.

edit : Get sure to download the patch-file for RDR2 on Github - Xenia Patches List[github.com].

I couldnt get it to work with the GOTY version, but youll most likely dont need it. Some config file tweaking will do just fine.

wowy
The first one looks almost like a remastered Red Dead Redemption version. I guess it's due the upscaling-technology.

Did you use FSR for RPCS3 ?
Schrute_Farms_B&B Apr 30, 2022 @ 4:56pm
Yes, exactly.

edit: It would be worth it to give RSR a shot if you own a RX 5000/6000 card. I didnt had the time to try it out but it might even work better.

But youve to disable FSR in RPCS3 first.

Really nice! i want to play RDR1 on PC too, how do i set this up?
Schrute_Farms_B&B May 1, 2022 @ 12:58pm
Its pretty easy nowadays since both emus are in an advanced state of development.
Just decide which emulator you want to use,
RPCS3[rpcs3.net] for PS3 or Xenia[xenia.jp] for Xbox360. Keep in mind that the PS emulator is heavily CPU bound while the Xbox emulator puts more load on the GPU.

Then just mount your RDR CD, create a ISO and load it into the emulator of your choice.
No firmware or manual patching required like with the old PS1/PS2 emulators.

edit: Feel free to ask any questions if your facing performance problems. RPCS3 is more beginner friendly and provides an internal settings menu and also a compatibility list[rpcs3.net] while youve to manually change the config file with Xenia and figure out the perfect settings by trial and error.

It has been fully playable for at least a year. I completed the story and all side missions on canary build in June 2021. What is really significant is that the game as of 18 Feb 2022 is feature complete.

As a PC owner that would love to play this game you've told me everything except for the hardware I need and the costs involved.

I would say any modern 6-core or better CPU and any midrange GPU like rx570/gtx1050 or better will do for HD 30 fps gameplay.
Yeah youre right. Ive even seen clips from two years ago where some people were able to finish the game with the RDR patch and some config workarounds and lowest setting with huge framedrops and freezes but the majority had huge issues to get this game even running.

It seems that things have changed and developed fast and seeing RDR on 4K with crispy textures just made my day/week/month. :)
I cant take my eyes away from the game and Im having a true blast playing this masterpiece.
It even starts right of the bat with Xenia without applying the patch. What an improvement. Literally no issues from beginning to end.

No wonder because real breakthrough happened in April 2021 and that's when the game became fully playable on midrange PCs https://xenia.jp/updates/2021/04/27/leaving-no-pixel-behind-new-render-target-cache-3x3-resolution-scaling.html
Good2know. Thanks for the info. :)

It depends on the emulator. Like already mentioned by another user, you should have at least a i5 Skylake or an AMD counterpart and a R9 390X/570X for 20-30 FPS.
Thats what I would call "playable".

edit: But on the other hand, I was able to tweak RDR on an old i5 4670K and a R9 290x to 20 FPS. And Ive seen other people with similar hardware being able to achieve even better results. It will take some time but if youre willing to invest some time, it might pay off. So in the end youve to decide for yourself, what playable means to you.
I mean 20 FPS doesnt sound too bad bad were talking heavy stuttering and 100% workload on both components.

Pardon my ignorance but I still don't get it. So I buy RDR1 from where and for what platform. Do I then need to buy an X Box or whatever and download an emulator and buy a lead to play on a PC?
