However, before all that, in the first chapter, after capturing Keiran, before returning to Colter, head to Cairn lake and get the treasure map in the shed. Then return to Colter and continue.
All that said, however you choose to play and explore, it will be a fun time.
You actually have to wait for Micah to plan the Strawberry Stagecoach Robbery. He gives you that Lancaster - then if you have one already - you now have TWO.
I don't really need a Lancaster and I sure as HELL don't need 2 of them. Like that White Arabian <---I don't need ANY Arabian and the White one is a beotch to keep clean (without a brush at that point - no thank you). I steal, bond and sell the one in St. Denis and if I'm ever around Owanjilla I do the same with the Red Chestnut (beautiful - but still an Arabian).
Also - there's a little bug when using a common start point. Before you know it you have 5 legendary Animals at the Trapper 'cause you're perpetually on one playthru.
Chapter one is short.
When I start over I start at Chapter one.
Most folks do.
This is simply Not True.
Prior to unlocking stables, you can freely add a spare horse, and your spare horse will still remain in camp, provided you leave them there when you go Bear Hunting with Hosea.
I have not tested replacing the initial Tennessee Walker (by getting multiple new horses), but your Tennessee Walker (original main horse) normally just gets put into the Stable (auto-magically) when you ride Hosea's big Shire and sell him at the Stable
So, i sometimes have 2 horses when i start Hosea's Bear Hunt, and i always still have them both after Hunting with Hosea (one in Stable, one in Camp) - i don't lose them, ever.
The Reverend Swanson mission will also unlock Hosea's Bear Hunt Mission.
Yes, this is a good save point.
Although, with Hosea's Bear Hunt completed, if you now hang around in the Camp after 2PM, Ms. Grimshaw will approach you and tell you to meet Hosea at Emerald Ranch - and this Hosea quest unlocks the Fence. (Ms. Grimshaw is a bit buggy, and sometimes needs a reload to kick it off).
And once you unlock the Fence at Emerald Ranch, that is another good save point. (and more realistic than cheesing the game by riding to Rhodes).
Completely agree - no need to cheese the game by getting weapons/horses/gold early - and there is Never a need to obtain the Arabian Horse - ANY horse will do well through the entire game - never mind that the Arabians are the size of "My Little Pony" - they're just missing rainbows.
I was encountering very buggy behavior by using a "Start of Chapter 2" game save - i then switched to a "mid-chapter 1" game save and noticed a difference in gameplay.
Now, i simply restart from the beginning - You are Right - it's quick and simple, and ensures any game save/database changes made by R* are captured properly.
so then I went on the bear hunt and WHAM this horse disappeared
I am glad others have not had problems but I have.
wasn't to bad because I started playing the game then realized wait I need to read the manual more and take it slower so I restarted it ... then I finished it .. all of it .. the I restarted it again to play it .. then I lost a horse again that I like so then I restarted it again to figure out what the deal is.
Some on hear do not loose horses evidently but this is what has happened to me ..
I get the Grizzly horse we finally get to horseshoe overlook I take this horse and start exploring I come across a guy and knife him take his horse and ride it around whistling to my original horse to follow then suddenly this horse becomes my main horse when this happens it says your horse has died and so I go back to get my saddle and put it on this new horse I got that I was riding bareback. (You also can't remove your saddle it seems to after the Bear Hunt.) so now I have a primary horse only one ..
Then I come across a great horse have still not been on the bear hunt .. then I eventually go on the bear hunt and have two horses then I loose both of em .... wheeee
Any mods installed ?
hm - you're right that you cannot remove the saddle prior to Hosea's Bear Hunt - any "alternate" horse you ride before then will simply be an alternate horse.
No matter how many times you switch, the Grizzly horse will always be your Main Horse (shown as a special horse icon in the minimap & overland map).
Alternate (or "spare") mounts show with a simpler Horse icon
However, i have no idea what happens if you manage to kill your Main Horse before going Bear Hunting with Hosea. That's a new on on me. ::shrug::
But simply put - i do agree that it is pretty much a wasted effort to try to find a "better horse" Before going Hunting with Hosea.
And i think that was your primary "Lessons Learned" that u wanted to share.
P.S. The "Mahogany Bay" Tennessee Walker we get in Chapter 1 is actually a pretty decent horse. With 3/4 stats for Health/Stamina, it is comparable to standard America Paints and Appaloosas. With an improved Saddle & Stirrups, this horse could make it through the game.

Why would I do that when I could just find the gold bars, fully upgrade and stock the camp with heaps left over? I haven't even gotten TB on my second run but I already have the Legend of the East satchel.
