Key Mapping Isues
Hi. I have changed the key mapping for the keyboard to my convenience, however the game still uses the original mapping keys. Example, I changed: move forward to cursor up, similarly the left, right & back, but in-game still considers W, A, S, D. Even many other keys were changed, but game is not honoring item eventhought it saves my key mapping. Any ideas why, this makes the game really poor to play.

did you save corectly, when i change keys and i left others unbind then i get a message if you exit now nothing will be saved. maybe you have unbinded keys and you ignored them, thus not saving the keys you changed? (its a thought not a 100% fix)
Oh and moving with mouse how that works? how do you aim then? so confused now.

Hi, yes I saved it as when I go back to the key mapping page, all the key bindings I assigned are there , however in the game they are not responsive. Any ideas?

It's simple; too many games use WASD so Red Dead assumed you had made a mistake, since nobody would ever want to map WASD to cursor keys, so it just dismissed that as a silly notion and allowed everything else.

Personally, I remapped almost all of the keys, and the movement keys haven't been a problem. The keys that have been a problem are the "Previous Tab" and "Next Tab" keys, since in a bunch of the menus, they don't actually get remapped. So, at minimum, there's a bug there, but most of the keys have remapped just fine.

Did you make sure that you remapped the movement keys for each type of transportation? Annoyingly, you have to remap the movement keys for when you're on foot, on horse, and on a vehicle separately. So, if you remapped only some of them, then that could get confusing - though in that case, they would work some of the time rather than none of the time.

Also, you should look over the key bindings and make sure that _all_ of the operations are bound to a key. It's my understanding that if you manage to have even one operation with no key assigned to it, then your key mappings won't take effect. My guess would be that that's what's happened to you. If you tell the game to map a key in spite of a conflict, it just removes the mapping from the operation that had been using that key rather than having the key be mapped to conflicting operations. And if you fail to bind a key to that operation, then your key mappings don't take effect, which isn't exactly user friendly. Personally, I wish that you could outright unbind some operations so that they're impossible to do, but the game doesn't allow that, and it doesn't do a great job of telling you that you've missed a key.

Yes I have mapped all the keys which I need mapping for, but the issue remains the same.

Cursor up? The up arrow key? If so I honestly thought Unreal Tournament was the last game anyone actually played that way. I switched to WASD 20 years ago. The arrow keys are used in menus, that could be a conflict. Not sure what the other user rebound WASD to.

That whole UI mapping table could be better laid out. Like why have separate WASD movement keys for not only character, but wagon and horse as well. It's redundant and just creates more clutter.

Because the wagon and horse are separate entities.

Edit: Besides, who really cares? Don't we all cry out for more options, until it gets confusing then we want less options?

LOL. Yea, there is a TON of flexibility but when it's all said and done it's just a hot mess.

Then all I can really suggest is contacting Rockstar support: https://support.rockstargames.com/categories

You can try mapping to different keys to see if that works, but if all of the operations have been mapped to a key, and any of your remappings aren't working, then that's a bug.

WASD never made sense to me.

It's only those because it gives you the most amount of additional buttons in the area. Almost 1/2 half the keyboard is within easy reach and things can be coordinated by letter. G for grenade, R for reload, C for crouch, etc.

imo buttons are to close toghter around WASD again it feels unnatural for me.

It's no different than putting your hands on the home row and typing a sentence. Same spacing. I would sympathize if not using a full size keyboard though. To this day I still hate typing on any notebook or smaller keyboard. I want a nice 21+ inch keyboard like my G15.

then you talking about the physical layout of the keys. If you have used gaming keypads like the Nostramus, Tartarus or Orbweavers, those keys are large in size and spaced out...
