Unlikely, otherwise we would already have them.

Nowadays pretty much every game requires online activation or always-on DRM, DLC content and huge patch downloads, multiple times the storage capacity of DVDs and even Blu-Rays.

Physical copies are obsolete and only produce trash.
In times of energy sucking server farms, we really don't need that on top.

Not sure if you're trolling or just ignorant.

A repost from another forum:

Modern gaming. All one has to do is "download" the game and play! Easy-Peasy right? Right! Already 'updated' for you? Check! Much easier than having a physical copy right? Um not so fast...

Since you don't own the physical copy of the game, you don't really own the game, the game you paid for. You have basically NO RIGHTS to YOUR game. The often complicated legal jargon you knowingly (or most likely unknowingly) 'agreed too' makes it (not so) clear it's not "your game" so they can do whatever they want with "their game".

Don't want your game I mean THEIR GAME updated? Too bad, so sad.

Don't want music taken away from your game their game? Boo-hoo! (Looking at you Rockstar).

Want to play 'some' of your their single player games without a constant internet connection? SOL buddy.

Want the original mature content that was in your game their game when you bought the game? Well it must be removed from your game (their game), because SJWs, Communist China, and other oppressive countries, don't like mature content in 'their' games. Sooo....

AND... don't even get me started with multiple game launchers you are required to have (some games), just to play your (their) damn game!

Side note: I still have physical copies of GTA 3 and GTA VIce City. These are MY GAMES no one can take away! And NO ONE can take away the original content from MY GAMES!. They will have to come to my house armed, and then pry my physical copies off my cold dead hands!

Physical copies are only obsolete to game companies who want TOTAL control over the game YOU paid for.

Those are decades old games.
Nowadays it really doesn't matter anymore if you have the data on a physical medium.
Without a server connection you can't activate it.
They already have control over that aspect.

In any case, here in Austria it doesn't matter what source the content is from.
I paid for the license to use the game, I'll just download the game content from Pirate Bay.
And even circumventing any copy protection isn't breaching any law, if it's trivially easy.

Furthermore, all these EULA and TOS of American companies are mostly null and void in Austria and the European Union anyway.

Those games I mentioned are old, but they are still games I enjoy and play from time to time.

R* took away (most of) the original music from GTA 3 up to 4 I believe. When the music license expires for 5 you can bet they will butcher those tracks as well. I can understand from a business perspective to remove said music from a game if the music license expires. What I can't understand is taking music away from people who bought the game before the music license expired. This just seems unethical and downright s**** imo.

But whatever.... let's just pull out the word 'LEGAL' and pretend that makes everything okay.

Not gonna get into the argument of "ownership" since that's a rabbit hole there's no getting out of and goes deeper than video games, but having the data of a game no longer means or amounts to anything nowadays.

Every new game basically has some sort of drm or launcher attached to it, so it doesn't even matter if you have the data stored away on a disk somewhere because you can't do anything with that data alone. And as soon as you get the launcher, drm etc to detect said data, it'll update, take away/add/modify anything as the devs intended. Most games tend to be less than a smooth experience at launch, so physical copies of a broken pile of code that needs to be heavily updated with a day one patch doesn't seem sensible.
Yes, having a physical copy of a game ensures that you have it at hand, but in today's context, physical copies no longer mean anything if they're not going to be a plug&play experience, and well... they're not anymore.
So your frustration is justified, but that's just the way it is now. Some pros here, some cons there.

This is part of the reason that physical copies are a thing of the past, like it or not, there's no "gamers rise up" situation for this. Physical copies are getting obsolete, at least for PC gaming.

this is just my opinion but i hope not. years ago i bought a physical copy of gta 5 for pc and i assumed that it would let you link the game with steam or something, not the case.

Yes, the only way to get a Steam key for Rockstar games since Max Payne 3 was to directly buy it on Steam.
All retail boxes had keys for their own Social Club system, as are all keys you can share/buy on key reseller sites.

So, if there will be a physical copy in the future, it will contain a key for the RGL.
(Unless Epic Games ventures into physical copies as well.)

That's actually kind of a sad event, considering that 70% of physical games for PC come with an activation code for Steam. Many of those that don't are for Uplay or Origin, which you need to run anyway, even if you buy their games digitally.
Personally, I've been buying most of my games physical lately for collection purposes, and I've never yet been disappointed or had any issues.

Apparently, there is one, but it's sort hard to come by. It's a code in a box, but still cool if you want it for collection purposes. I will see if I can get one myself.
