How do you get max speed on a horse?
Matchmaking has convinced me I must be doing something wrong in getting my horse to run fast. I noticed my mates always leave me far behind though they are at my level and doesn't level determine when you can get a faster horse?

To go faster I press the A button and that does speed up Barney, but he never gets to what I'd call a flat out gallop.

Your horse is just a potato

Just hop on the back of someone else's horse as passenger

I think for a controller you've to keep tapping the A button or sprint button, I use keyboard and mouse obviously and can just hold it but a friend mentioned on the console version he had to keep tapping it so maybe try that I guess.

You should take a look at your horse's tack. At the stable, buy a better saddle and sitrrups to increase horse performance if you haven't done so already. There are also game settings that change how sprint / speed changes are handled by your input, so maybe look there to see if there's a setting that works better.

I had another guy jump on mine and I wondered why...after he had jumped on my nag, he probably wondered why too!
