Red Dead Redemption 2

[How can these developers exist?] Please explain this to me!?
So, for centuries now, we had a few types of blips on mini-map to tell us who our enemy is.
For some reason, Red Dead Redemption 2 is completely broken on this behalf.

I was in Rhodes, the glitch city, a Night City of RDR2, and as I was leaving a store, a random red blimp appeared on my mini map, and a guy on a horse started shooting at me, I Dead Eyed his head off, and suddenly, entire city witnessed a murder, and the entirety of the Rhodes Police Department went after me.

Now, since Rockstar doesn't tell you this in game, I'm kind of forced to ask here, when can I kill a person shooting at me? And how do I know I am doing something wrong while self-defending?

This happened on multiple instances, enemies will turn red on mini-map, reassuring my gamer-brain that I need to take them down, and suddenly, honor lost, murder witnessed.

I mean, it should be logical for everyone to shoot back at a random lunatic with a shotgun and a horse, but for some reason, in this game it's wrong.

Please explain this system to me, it's been running me crazy!
Who am I allowed to kill and when?

Is there a mod for PC that changes the colors of this blips so I know I may not kill someone running after me?

Pay your bounty - or stay out of town.
If you fart - you'll hang.
If you fire your weapon - you'll hang.
You're Wanted - Fix that with money at the post office then stop murdering people or the cycle simply repeats.

Oh, you can go full-on-Satin-Squad if you want to, but you'll have to battle every lawman in the world, so you'd better have lots of Dead Eye to burn. Best to behave yourself while you level up, or you'll be a walking advertisement for Swiss Cheese underpants.

Also your Honor has a lot to do with what you can and can't get away with. High Honor - 75% full - means you can get away with a lot. Low Honor - below 50% and you can't spit on the sidewalk before they start erecting a gallows just for you...lol

Ya gotta learn how to play.
Ya gotta learn who to shoot - and where to shoot 'em.
Ya gotta learn who to loot and who not to loot.

It's a process. Play the game and learn the process.

well yeah..... how about throwing a lasso at him, instead of blowing his head off,
cause what do you think: a possible civilian or police attacks you.
you murder them in town, you think the police will just ignore that???

or even if it was a bandit, you think civilians that might witness that will ignore a dead body with a shooter in sight?
or a sheriff that hears a gunshot in his town, will just ignore it and keep chewing his tabacco?

and if he just comes riding up to you and instantly shooting,
maybe you did something wrong while driving to town?
maybe you knocked him off his horse and he chased you.
you'll have to know what you did that caused the npc's to attack you,

take appropriate actions. knock him out, or lasso him.
but murdering somebody in town won't end well for you.

Thanks for the post, it sadly has nothing to do with my problem.

As I said, game doesn't know if 'red dots' are bad guys, or not, game also doesn't know who to punish, the ones being problematic, or ones self-defending.

AS I stated, this encounter happened in the middle of the city, with police around, no one tried to save me, so I decided to save myself, this resulted in a bounty.

Quick load of the last autosave solved the issue, it's still sadly broken af.

I am sorry, what? Why are you going that deep into a situation you had no knowledge of?

I was in city, minding my own business, walking from store to store, acquiring items and ammunition, when suddenly a guy with a shotgun on horse, marked on my mini-map as a 'red dot' (an enemy) started shooting at me immediately, police WAS around and stood still, so I just fired back, for police to then react.

This game is realistic on surface, you shall know it if you played it.

sigh.....
i've played singleplayer for close to 200 hours,
multiplayer a Absurd amount of hours.
so don't assume right?

and i'm not saying the game doesn't have flaws,
but the weird things you keep posting about, i haven't experienced.
i've never had a random stranger ride up and try to shoot me, unless if i did something to antagonize them.
i've never had issues escaping the police,
i've never had issues with fighting people in melee combat, or retreating/falling back to pop a tonic to survive.

seems you just stumble on issues that you're not used to yet on how to properly counter them,
or not seeing certain mechanics that you're doing wrong.

as for my "deep dive", that's because the situations you describe make no sense.
so i try to think about (try to make sense) what could have caused the problem for you,
in an effort to explain some possible details you could be missing out on.

like:
*maybe you did something wrong while driving to town?
*maybe you knocked him off his horse and he chased you.

if that you think that's wrong, then i wish you best of luck figuring out more of the game on your own, while you keep beeing frustrated about possible mistakes that you make in the game......

ride safe cowboy.

I have.

There's a guy in St. Denis that tries to lure you into a back alley... if you refuse/decline sometimes his friend (who normally you won't see) will open up on you from horseback. He can be standing anywhere, but shows up right there next to the Gunsmith. Sound familiar?

Out in the country the proper response would be to blow his brain out. In St. Denis the proper response is to take cover/leave, do NOT fire your weapon and wait for the Police to sort it out 'cause a player with low honor is just another criminal shooting up the place. Best not get involved.

If you had Hero Honor - you might get away with it, Maybe, but firing a weapon in the city is a bad idea for anybody.

ah yeah but that's a random encounter, wich can lead into a fight and all its consequences.

but as op explained: a red dot just came racing up to him and opened fire,
that just doesn't happen right? unless antagonized/provoked somehow.
JuiceWSA Jan 16, 2022 @ 2:24pm
That's how he shows up... red and firing - but I always have to decline, or antagonize the 'trickster' - before the 'assailant' appears and starts shooting at me.

I've also been attacked at the Trapper Stall - out of the blue by some black guys - when I refused to go get attacked by some black guys out behind the saloon. Seems they have to get that altercation in, one way or another. It hasn't happened yet this playthru - and I got my good eye peeled for those guys..lol

hmm never knew/experienced that,
but then again i only played sp once,
compared to your 4th or 5th time 8)
JuiceWSA Jan 16, 2022 @ 2:46pm
In the 4th - 1650hrs or so.

When those guys attacked me at the Trapper Stall, I was happy to just beat 'em, but Arthur pulled his weapon without any help from me and a round went off, the bullet grazed The Trapper's Beard and the only ones left in the Market was me and the Cat...

I decided to be somewhere else - in a hurry.
I left the cat to take the heat.

:)

I wasn't even being rude, I was just saying, because the way you wrote it made it seem like you are 100% sure it's what happened.

And I'm telling you, it sadly isn't the case.

Also, you mentioned how it's logical for law to be involved when shooting in town, I had this random encounter with a random bad guy who I killed while officer was pretty close, he was an obvious criminal, but game still didn't react the way it did in this 'Rhodes situation' I've had.

Not the exact situation, as mine happened in Rhodes, no conversation or situation, it just kinda happened, out of nowhere. Also, my honor has been high all game, I've been doing well killing only ones that pull their weapons on me.

Most bad honor I got is from looting dead bodies, but I played a ton of Cyberpunk lately, so I feel it's justified. :(

Wanna help me a bit? I've been playing for a while now, nothing drastic happened yet, I've just finished a party mission at mayor's place with that Italian guy at Saint Denis, what chapter is it? Can I check this in settings?

It's my first time playing, game's good.

AND, a HUGE NOTE: I have most rare things happen to me in every game I play, I'm kind of unlucky so yeah, most of these might be bugs since I left most with loading an autosave for them to never ever occur again.

Pro Tip #1:
Don't rely on Autosave. Manually save often - before doing anything risky, or even remotely risky.

That was The Gilded Cage Mission in Chapter 4. You're about halfway through. If you have things to do - do them. Don't talk to Sadie until you get what you want to do done. You can go Russlin' with Uncle if you want - that's a fun one. There may also be a Stage Robbery with Micah. Do that as well.

If you didn't save Algernon Wasp from death by choking at the Mayor's - you may need to replay that mission in order to start his quest soon after - which may take a while - so you want to get it going ASAP. You need 'Duchesses and Other Animals' for 100% and it's quite the grinder.

You don't want to push too hard on the story right here - at least I don't. Having a backlog of things to complete in Chapter 6 is a PITA. Get some stuff out of the way. The more the better.

Thanks so much for this! Much love!

I was thinking of where I was in the story, I probably won't go for a 100% as I've already missed a few things due to being dumb and not manually saving.

I also didn't find anyone choking at mayor's party, I can't believe I missed it. :/

Algernon will show up on his own, just not sure when. He's in a little building off a Garden on the North Side of St. Denis. If you see a Mission Icon labeled: "Al" or "AW" (can't recall which now) just go over and see him. He's a hoot actually.

Check the Log (L), then look for 'The Gilded Cage'. Select it, then view the details and you'll see the requirements for a Gold Medal...
or
Hit Esc, Progress, Story, Chapter 4, Select The Gilded Cage and press spacebar to see the checklist. You can Replay the Entire Mission from here, but you will have default stats and weapons - but it sure doesn't matter for The Gilded Cage - you're not carrying any weapons, you just have to do some things you didn't do.

Ideally, you would just load a save from before you spoke with Hosea at camp - and do the whole mission over. It doesn't take much to Gold that one and you get Algernon going before Chapter 6.

When playing a mission goes haywire - hit L - check the mission details - then 'Abandon'... you can pick up at the last Checkpoint to try that section again, or restart the whole mission while you're there.

Not many get everything in one playthru.
I haven't gotten everything in 4 and probably won't get everything in 5, but I'm making plans for it anyway...lol

Note:
When you finish the Algernon Missions - BE SURE to go to the Post Office Immediately and grab Algernon's Handbill Exotics Order. It allows you to mail any extra Exotics you may have, or gather throughout the rest of the game - for a pretty penny too I might add.

If you don't go right away and get the Handbill - it's bugged and won't show up at all - leaving you to carry those things forever. You can't drop them and nobody else will take them. I had to carry them last time, I finished Algernon last night and went as soon as I left Algernon's place, got the handbill and sent off everything extra I had - phew... glad that's over - and now in my travels when I run onto an exotic - I can pick it up and mail it.

"A Fine Night of Debauchery" Note:
Don't sell the Reutlinger Pocket Watch. Open your inventory, go to 'the little hand' icon, Select 'A Collection of Pocket Watches' and 'Equip' The Reutlinger Watch. You can now look at the Watch from the Weapon Wheel, same section as the Binoculars, arrow over to the watch and you'll pull it out and look at it to get the time. Tapping Alt will also give you the Time, Temp, Honor and Wanted status for the region you're in, but the watch thing is a neat little detail.

You can't look at the watch while on the horse, for some reason. Another little bug I guess.
