One at a time.
I have every trapper saddle, but since I can't have more than one owned horse out at a time I only need one saddle at a time. I can swap saddles - but I can't put my Panther Saddle on the Dark Bay Turk and the Alligator Saddle on the Silver Dapple Pinto and have the game remember that. Unfortunately.
If I call a horse in at the Horse Station in camp (after I buy it, of course), it'll have whatever saddle was on the horse I replaced.
You can have a 'temporary horse', at the camp or just standing around somewhere - and that is a stolen horse (with it's original saddle) or tamed horse (with no saddle), but as soon as you put one of your saddles on a temporary or stolen horse - it's
yours. <---that's also a good way to lose a horse you intended to keep. When you move your saddle to a temp horse, that becomes your primary horse and you can lose a temporary horse easily.
No matter - you can't carry more than one large pelt on a horse - saddle or not.
You can take two horses hunting. It is a PITA, but can be done.
Not all legendary pelts are large.
You could hunt one large one and stack 20 (I've actually never found out how many you can stack, but it's more than 10) mediums on one horse - and not have to fiddle with two horses.
I've hunted with two horses.
I don't have to try it again to know it wasn't all that great...lol
I have taken 2 temps to the fence to sell, but I had to 'leap frog' them and it was good that I wasn't very far from the fence...lol
You can (and should) wear cover scent lotion, but your horse(s) can't.
Predators love horse meat - and what's stacked up on it's butt.
I would NOT take 2 horses into the Bayou.
That's a recipe for disaster.
Been there - done that - have the autographed T-Shirt.
There are 5 large legendary hides:
Grizzly
Bisons - 2
Elk
Bullgator (chapter 6)
The rest are mediums/smalls(?) and can stack one on top of the other - and also under a large.
There are many large legendary fish - but those should be taken to the post office immediately - before they rot.
1 horse is plenty.
You're not going to finish this game in 6 hours.
It takes time and you'll enjoy every minute of it.
