RDO is the Multiplayer in the game, wich is free with RDR2 (or as a stand alone RDO purchase)
for RDO it works like gta5 online, you create your own character,
from there you start as a nobody and will have to work your way up,
starting businesses and gathering wealth etc (trader, moonshiner, collector, bounty hunter, naturalist).
in Multiplayer there are 10+ story missions (these need more then 1 player, so are coop),
5 moonshiner story missions from the moonshiner role that you can play in coop,
Bloodmoney missions wich you can play in coop.
Strangers that offer missions wich you can also play together.
and 10 Legendary bounties with their own little intro and 5 difficulties.
other randoms. is it possible to just host a lobby with just us or is it a server where you join and there are 30 other players always there?
if its like gta i suspect the amount of cheating is similar?
so you'll be mixed with 10/15/20+ players in the world yes
there are mods that allow you to play private without other players
but these are "use at own risk", cause if rockstar wants, they can crackdown on it and just ban you, resetting your rank/money/char etc.
story/bloodmoney/legendary bounty missions will always load you into a private world though,
but once finished you'll be put in the free roam world again with other players.
other missions will often have a icon wich shows if pvp is enabled for it or not,
so people could mess with you,
but mostly the rdo community seems pretty relaxed and people are a lot more friendly then gta5 online, no orbital strikes etc,
people drop animals for donation from time to time, wave and just be on their way again.
and personally i only encounter the occasional troll who thinks they can get away with shooting you. but they are countered quite easy by using explosive or flame ammo,
or just by switching lobby/server.
cheating seems to depend on region,
eu seems to have less issues with cheaters (atleast in my case),
usa people you hear a lot more about cheaters.
but this is also fairly easy to counter by just switching lobby/server and then reinviting your buddy to the new lobby/server again.
i would say look up some RDO videos from pvpcat, hazard, jowers97 and silentcore,
that can probably give you the best idea of what to expect of the gameplay and options in the game to see if it's to your liking.
