Mods and Updates to RDR2 - Story Mode
I recieved the game a month or so ago and am getting pretty far through it, however, I love some of the modding groups stuff out there I'm seeing on the RDR2 Mod page and Nexus.

One thing I hate is having mods break for every update. My question is, since I only use story mode and will never do online mode. Is RDR2 getting any updates in the future or is it pretty much complete? I know there was some bug fixes in the summer of 2021, but I have read there is no future development for it.

With that, if this is the case, then I'd probably start getting into the mods. I just don't want to do it if they will end up breaking due to updates and then having to wait for those mods to be updated etc.

There hasn't been an update to Story since the release on PC. You're safe to go.

No new in-game content has been added to Story Mode since the PC release, but several updates since have affected Story Mode, in the form of bugs and glitches for instance. Even when they were described as Red Dead Online updates.

Most notably there was a large RDO + DLSS update last year which broke Script Hook, this caused several mods to not work for a few hours until a temporary fix was uploaded, and a week after that Script Hook itself received a proper update. Nothing terrible, obviously, but it happened. You may have read about this particular instance already.

As for your question though, OP, while future updates to this game may still have the potential to temporarily break certain mods depending on what they consist of, it hasn't been receiving updates often enough in order to hold off from modding the game altogether. R* doesn't seem particularly concerned with the state of their game, and aren't enthusiastically rolling out updates regardless of if stuff needs fixing. I've been happily playing with mods for months in a row now, as have others. I think you'll be good for the most part in the foreseeable future!

Great thanks for the responses. I kind of figured it was no longer a focus for Rock Star and wouldn't ever be getting any new DLCs or content (sadly no Mexico), but yeah the mods I want to use, do use Scripthook for sure, but I'll go ahead and play around with some of the mods for new things they add then.

I just hate playing something like ETS2 where I have several big mods and everytime it gets updated you have to wait on all the mods to update or the entire thing breaks and that's a big pain in the butt and I'm constantly having to roll back the game version until that happens, which sometimes takes a lot of time...

I feel the same about Mexico, which would've been fantastic :(. As for the mods itself, there are quite a few great ones available by now. Something for everyone, I think. Before that large update I mentioned earlier that messed things up R* released several other updates I played through with mods, Script Hook and other files, with no issues whatsoever. You'll most likely have a much easier time with RDR2 than ETS2, and perhaps other games.

That's good to know, and yeah there are a number of mods, but not an overwhelming amount which is good because that can be just way to much to weed through. Just thinks like selling guns and bank robberies are the ones I am looking towards and opening up the entire map so I can play as I want, etc

I use these and can vouch for them as they do NOT break the game:

Native Trainer Reskinned:
https://www.rdr2mod.com/native-trainer-reskinned-and-arrow-keys/
(works just as well as the standard Native Trainer - with LeMat, arrow keys and easier on eyeballs - mine, at least)

Dead Eye Master:
https://www.nexusmods.com/reddeadredemption2/mods/232
(got tired of playing around with R*'s Auto Mark Level One Nightmare - and being eaten by alpha predators I could only manage to shoot in the foot - defaults to Max Level 4 - User can define different actions)

Automatic Greet Replies:
https://www.nexusmods.com/reddeadredemption2/mods/452
("Hello, Mister" - and I'll not crash my horse into you while I speak to you, K?)

More Persistent Weather:
https://www.nexusmods.com/reddeadredemption2/mods/810
(I like rain that lasts longer than 2 minutes)

Disable Out of Bounds Snipers:
https://www.nexusmods.com/reddeadredemption2/mods/877
(New Austin is a crap hole - but seeing just how much is easier when you're not having your head blown off - Tame the Blackwater Pinkertons with 'Never Wanted' in the Trainer).

No game files altered.
Latest Scripthook deployed.

The "few small issues" (the only ones I have found):

Trainer:
1) If you have the game clock paused, the Donation box is inaccessible. Let the game clock run in Camp. Solved.

2) If you use 'Real Time' or 'Computer Time' The Camp can go from Gold Provision Icons to Red if you save and reload without returning game clock to normal state. Solved by using only Pause Clock.

3) If you forget to let the game clock run when you sleep - you may wake up at the exact moment you laid down. Mostly associated with 'Real' or 'Computer' time. 'Pause' seems unaffected.

Those are the only issues I've found and I wouldn't even consider those 'game breaking'. Just irritants really.

Not so much an issue, but some advice: When you 'Teleport' to another map location (Trainer), do so on a ROAD, 'cause when you and your horse arrive in the top of a tree and hit every branch on the way down - it really makes your horse unhappy.

Enjoy.

Of course, ALL of these will need to be removed completely for Online, but there are only about a Dozen Files in total, easily dragged to a folder for safe keeping, then put back in the game directory for Single Player.

I have the sniper one already as that seems to be one that people recommend with the opening of Armadillo area...
