RDR2 game performance worsens the longer I'm playing it.
I've noticed that Red Dead Redemption 2, online in particular, will run perfectly for the first 1-2 hours that I'm playing, after that I'll start to notice lots of stuttering start to crop up, especially upon entering combat, throwing dynamite or fire bottles and sometimes entering certain towns. But once I restart the game, performance is fine again for a couple hours. Any idea the cause of this and how it might be fixed?

Heat, most likely.

This game will test your maintenance schedule.
Clear out the dust bunnies and let her breathe.

Compressed air is your friend, just dont do it on a hot potato or in hot weather !

if that dont help, then renew the cooling paste and or buy a better cooler / better fans for your case !

I use 8 x Artic Bionix 140 .. so hardly need a fan on my cpu and could run it passiv if i wanted to do that !

Idle temp 28-31c , full power 5 ghz temp 49-54 c
Gpu temp idle 28-32, full power 55-62 c

I can recommend Noctua aswell

I have dusted recently, would reducing game settings or anything else reduce heat? I can't really afford to do anything to my pc atm.

well you can start to check if all your fans is mounted correctly first ?

if turned the wrong way it dont make the correct push/pull flow in your case !

Intake and exit .. normal intake is in front and buttom / side panel buttom ... and outtake is top and back panel / top side panel .. so make sure the air is going the right ways .. because if that fan is flipped the wrong way it makes intake where it should make outtake and reverse ..

reapply cooling paste with a rubberglove and spread it is a good one aswell .. it can lower atleast 10-20 c if apply correctly with the correct amount of paste .. to much and it have the opposite effect ..

paste is just used to close the gaps bestween the cooler and the cpu ... you know to avoid small air bobble´s .. so less is better

I don't really know how to tell. It's an old pc, it was a dell pre built that I got several years ago, I've since swapped out a few parts but never touched the fans, I would assume dell mounted them correctly. If I'm not mistaken, the pc only has one fan, so I guess that's the problem?

Yes, reducing the settings will ease the load. The only way to find out is to try it. I'd first give it a good cleaning. We're moving so much air through these things when playing the game it's gonna get dirty quicker than normal.

Your processor has a fan right on it. There should be a case fan. There's a fan, or 3 in your graphics card. Also a fan in your power supply and those are famous for storing dust - you need to get right in there with a can of air and the hose attachment thingy...

Air is cheap.
Computers aren't.

1 fan ? holy ... laptop or desktop ?

if laptop, then your only option is an external laptop cooler and if you go extreme then with icewater / Ln2 underneath it .. xD

It's a desktop. There's one fan on the back and a vent on the side panel and small vent on the bottom front panel.. This may be a stupid question, but would opening the side panel a little or a lot and maybe pointing a box fan or something at it help.. xD

So, you've never opened the case and cleaned the cpu cooler, or the graphics card fans... yep - heat is your problem I'd almost guarantee.

Opening the case is a last ditch effort. I'm forced to 'cause the AMD RX-570 is a bit bigger than this box can comfortably hold - so the case is off. That just lets more dust in, but it's way easier to clean...lol

I have used canned air several times on the inside of the system, but I've never deep cleaned.

Clean it, Nose... get that thing breezy.

The one in the side, if that one got a pipe toward your cpu .. then it needs to make outtake .. if it is placed above your gpu then it needs to make outtake ..

If the sidefan is below your graphics card and dont have a pipe that goes to your cpu .. then it needs to make intake .. same with the one in the front ..

then you have 1 back outtake fan ..

You could make some holes your self and mount extra fans that way ..

what dell do you have ?

Try bumping your shadows and water quality down a notch and see if that helps.

There's no fans, just grates on the side panel, like small openings in the panel.
Only fan is the one on the back.

cotton swabs & rubbing alcohol for deep cleaning or electronics cleaner .. that is what i use ..

you can allso take a bathtub and deep clean the electronics that way .. but you need to make sure that it is absolutly dry afterwards !

and some components cannot handle it .. so you need to watch a video about it first, before you attempt it !
