But, ‘also-yes’ this game has some very violent moments. It also has some very heartfelt/tender moments.
The game offers plenty for decent-folk to enjoy. :)
I think a person could get a lot of hours out of not advancing the story and just free-roaming the world. But second-playthrough? No, you'll always be an outlaw. On the flip side if you want to be a really bad guy the game won't let you do that either. It's Arthur's character arc to be the good one in the end.
I am just finishing Kingdom Come Deliverance playing as a 'tank' and mercilessly killing bandits and Cumans. Even seeking out bandit / Cuman camps when there's no quest to do so.
I guess just want a story... a real story. And I've been uncertain that RDR2 would fit the bill.
I really enjoyed the single player campaign. :)
There’s a reason why RDR2 was Steam’s 2020 Game of the Year. XD
One common complaint about the game is it starts a bit slow. Otherwise, it’s amazing.
Online is also fun despite the occasional griefers and cheats who inhabit most online games. It allows an opportunity for role playing and to continue experiencing the incredible world R* have created. The community is generally friendly.
Its a completely different world to KCD of course, but both are large open world games with great characters and lots to explore and do.
I love them both and think you might too. Wait for a sale if your not sure but I dont think you will regret the purchase.
Oh look, Henry's come to visit! :o)
Red Dead has amazing wildlife AI. I don't think even hunting games can surpass it, lol

Thank you. Just what I wanted to hear. I've been playing video games for at least 30 years--started when everything was 2D side-scrollers. Duke Nukem is the earliest I remember.... when I really got hooked.
Someone (several someones, actually) over in the KCD forum recommended RDR2 when I asked if there was any game out there that compared.
That said, i do believe that KCD is the best, most interesting, most fun, most bug-free game I have ever played. Of course, I only played the latest version but I am feeling quite lost now that I have come to the end. Wil probably do another play-through on Hard Core mode but for now I just want to let the impact of my first play-through linger.
RDR2 is a little steep for me right now (I am 75 years old and on a fixed income) but when it goes on sale, I think ... based on this thread, mostly... that I will pick it up.
If you have any tips--if there are updates I need or DLC's that I should look at. please let me know
"Jesus Christ be Praised."
It has a story yes, very much so. its not just violence, its like a movie but you are playing the main character, you should def. pick it up on sale
Well, obviously I can't compare since I do not own RDR2 yet. But I made a good portion of my income in KCD hunting. I knew of two boar hunting spots, one near Sassau, one near Ledetchko that were near bandit camps. I'd go clear them out (after the first time the new bandits were not nearly as well equipped) and then hunt boar. Cook it at the bandit's camp fire and then ride it into town for really good coin.
And at the same time got xp for my bow skills.
I'm a fanboi!
Cool, if when you pickup rdr2 you'll see just how much of an upgrade hunting is compared to KCD, lol.
Well! What a turn of events... I came to this forum uncertain and almost a little put off but now, thanks to you and everyone else in this thread i actually looking forward to it. On the edge of my seat waiting for a sale.
Thanks to everyone.
I don't know how that would work. For some reason, I have come to like playing through Steam, and I don't really feel entirely comfortable posting or asking questions on Steam forums if I didn't get the game through Steam.
This is a game set in the "very late afternoon" of the golden age of the classical American Western (not quite at it's sunset, but the West is obviously headed into a slow death). Not to be a Cheeky Bastard, but you do understand there's no room for a tea and biscuits scenario; if there is, there's probably crass humor, gunfights, profanity, and risque business thrown in. It is a Rockstar game, after all. There is that M rating it has, with a panache for Blood and Gore, Intense Violence, Nudity, Sexual Content, Strong Language, and Use of Drugs and Alcohol. You probably won't be able to walk away from a scripted gunfight mission - if you do, you'll fail the mission and the purpose of the game.
Yes, there can be ultra-violence. There are shootouts. There is disregard for society. It can be Blazing Saddles and Wagons East without any inference of violence in one moment, but changes to A Fistful of Dollars or Barbarosa the next, and Unforgiven or the Wild Bunch at yet another.
But then again, are you expecting an American Western to be like Downton Abbey? If so, it's no longer a Classical Western, but a SJW fantasy and bastardization of American Western culture. By all means, either walk away, or buy the game, try it, and refund it if you don't like it. But I'm sorry to say, this game might not be for you.

As said above, it's 'an open world sandbox'.
The story involving Dutch and the gang is what you'd expect for an outlaw gang.
But you can just go off and do your own thing; hunting, fishing(wide range of animals and fish), camping and cooking kill, exploring the territory, playing cards, taking canoes down rivers, collecting all sorts of stuff, from guns to rare objects and treasure, etc.
There are many 'moral choices' and the Honour system is always letting you know how morally you are playing the game.
Personally when I've had enough of some games that incorporate violence, then returning to RD2 is like a holiday. (Couple of months to next Steam sale).
