Got to hunt me a perfect rat, any hint on where to find them?

Hey guys,

I'm doing the Hunting Challenge two and for that I have to kill a perfect rat.
I first thought I could find them in cities and towns, since in RL they're known for being "culture followers", so e.g. they're accustomed to humans and live from remains we leave behind e.g. thrown away food.
Oddly I couldn't find any rats in towns so far.

I'm roaming around in regions, where, according to the RDR wiki, rats should be e.g. northeast of the Owilja dam (the one southwest of Strawberry) but I couldn't find any of these damn small rodents so far.
I'm trying with my own eyes, I'm trying with the Hunting Dead Eye cam, but no luck.

Do you guys have any hints on how to find these elusive little ♥♥♥♥♥ or do I really need to use baits to find them?

I saw some near water or there is a sidemission in Saint Denis, where you have to kill rats in a saloon. But there are different kind of rats, I guess...

I wasn't even in Saint Denis yet, I just begun Chapter 3 and I was roaming around doing side quests for several ingame weeks by now (damn the gang will be mad, when I'm finally returning to them lol), so is that an option?
Aren't there people going crazy and calling the police, when I start shooting with arrows there?

Ok quick update, I went to Saint Denis, came by the saloon overrun by rats, I thought, I could try to kill them with my small game arrows and the bow, see if they grant perfect carcasses and indeed these event spawned brown rats do, it did count towards the Hunt Challenge :D

Found a perfect cardinal to shoot from the sky west of Valentine and a Woodpecker in East New Hannover in Roanoke, so I can finish this side quest now :)

Rats show up near corpses of dead animals sometimes, too.

i got 16 pelts - thats all needed- from bar infestation event x3.
varmint does it as well

Should be OK on beach (look map I added later)

i looked on the beach and could not find any, im trying to get a trapper hat

holy necro dude.

if you want it that bad just let a body decompose somewhere and wait for the rats to show up.

or just go to the saint denis slum bar and continue passing it day by day until the event where it's overrun with rats.

or go to the lemoyne battlefield or the church and explore until you hear squeaking.

You can find rats in the torched town just outside of Horseshoe Overlook. Limpany I believe.
