Trapper Problem
The first time I went to the trapper at his outpost, I was in the process of selling him hides and the interaction suddenly cut back to the game to him saying something along the lines of "what are you up to?", then calling for law enforcement etc. Did I sell him something illegal? I'm not sure what happened here.

This happened to me, too. The consensus online (from a year ago) is that he is behaving as if you are pointing a gun at him.
Try to approach him on foot, with your horse near enough and then trade that way. That is what worked for me.

That reminds me of when I was wanted for stealing after I picked up the money that the sheriff left on his desk as a reward for turning in the killer prostitute. Every way I went about it resulted in the same problem, so I gave up on dealing with the killer prostitute for the moment.

Fortunately, I've never had any problems with the trapper, but AFAIK, it's not possible to ever get in trouble for selling something. If it's something that requires a fence to sell, then you can only sell it to a fence, and other merchants won't accept it. No one will turn you in for trying to sell something to them. So, I'd definitely say that it's a bug.

He'll stop interacting with you if you've got Bounty Hunters or Lawmen coming after you too. Whatever triggers this, you can usually just run away a bit then come right back and he'll talk to you again.

Thank you both. I did also get chased by someone immediately after so maybe that was it. I did have a bounty out on me at the time.

Much appreciated.

Just in case anyone else stumbles upon this issue.
Another posibility ius that you're still wering a facemask/bandana - trapper will not interract with you as well.
P.S. sorry for necroposting, just had same problem myself

Does this apply to wearing a mask on your neck not actively on though?
