can you bring down the legendary cougar?

Of all the animals, I think the cougar is the greatest challenge because it is very fast and it always attacks and grips tight with its claws. Though the normal cougar can be killed without too much trouble if you are ready for it, I've found the legendary cougar impossible to kill before he gets me. The only time I had a chance was when I was near water and could jump in where he could not follow, but he then ran away. I don't use dead eye.

Dunno about the cougar, but I'm always glad to read a post from someone who also don't use deadeye.

I got it with a high velocity shot from the Rolling Block at range, and when it charged, ordinary buckshot blast with the M1897 Shotgun. Stalking it conventionally was a nightmare though.

I have only gotten it a couple of times without dying once or twice. Got a long range shot with sniper rifle GG'd my horse and got it with shotgun slugs as it charged and never even got thrown. I did use deadeye with the shotgun.

Elephant rifle. While aiming press spacebar + left/right to dive it's attack. Then pop pop!

Fight it off first time it grabs you (F key I think), then when it's sizing you up for a second attack shoot the blitter until it stops moving. And, be fast.

Shotgun+paint it black+winning streak+any dmg cards you have, horse+slow and steady+dmg cards+whatever gun you like. You can also sedate them and kill sedated (don't sample if you want pelt).

Using cover scent lotion will buy you some time. It helped me with the legendary panther.
