question about legendary animals
i was hunting a legendary buck but realized i didn't bring poison arrows so had to leave after already spotting him, i then went back into town to craft the arrows. i go back and there is no prompt saying i'm in legendary territory, i then check my map and the elk is crossed out, i checked my player progress stats and it says i've spotted the buck but havn't killed him. am i now not able to hunt it? thats kind of ridiculous if so because now i can't even craft the items that require his pelt

Why do you need poison arrows to hunt a legendary animal ? You can do that with any weapon technically.

i studied him and it said to use poison arrows for perfect pelt, loading an old save file just isn't an option because i'd lose 10 days of progress cus i wasn't being smart

I see, makes sense then.

You gotta come back and find him again.

In story mode you can kill them with whatever you want, legendary animals always give perfect pelt. You can literally shred them with explosive slugs and it'll be fine.

if in SP mode, you kill a legendary animal but lose the pelt, the animal WILL NOT respawn! . BUT, the pelt will be automatically sent to the Trapper to use in crafting the special clothes and such. the downside is you cannot be paid for the pelt!

dang guys its been a while now since this post, and the animal is still crossed out! i checked with the store and my personal stats and it definately wasn't killed. i dont understand ! it must be bugged or something, thats a major rip because i wanted to 100 percent this game and its looking like i won't be able to

Have you checked if you have the pelt at the trapper? Or looked at the compendium to see if the buck is there?

I guess you have looking again at your post.

I just started playing this earlier and killed the bear after doing the introductionary quest for hunting. I tried finding the the trapper but got caught up in the reverend quest where he almost gets run over by the train and when I got back to my horse, the pelt had fallen off and I couldn't interact with it anymore. Is there a personal storage box or something you get? Having something like that would make things like this convenient.

And if people don't mind me asking, if you donate stuff like pelts to the cook guy, I assume they can't be used for crafting? I ask because I did donate a skin and one of the storage upgrades is not greyed out?

Secondly, is there a way to quick save? How you save in this game is ridiculously clunky and if you ♥♥♥♥ up and need to reload, it's very easy to lose track of time and then have to go back hours. Like rescuing Sean, getting away on low health and somehow slipping on some stones, rolling down a hill to your death.

If the pelt fell off your horse, it will be at the trapper. Check if you can craft any legendary bear items with him.

The pelts, etc that Pearson needs to craft camp items and satchels are listed when you click the craft option at his counter in camp.

You can accumulate all of your pelts, etc at both of the above until you are ready to craft an item. Don't try this with a fence however.

Best thing is to save regularly, especially if there is a high chance of dying. It is clunky, but I don't know of a quicker way to save.

Hope this helps.

I figured as much, thank you for the confirmation. The way the game handles saving is something you'd expect a couple of decades ago. It should auto-save at the start/end of a mission. Hell, Horizon Zero Dawn's bonfire saving system is leaps and bounds ahead of the save system in this game which is the main thing that's annoying me the most about it.
