You can turn this off, but other players in your secession can still have it turned on.
Game is way better for me now with it.
This is why I think dedicated servers would be great. Or even a session info window so you can see if you're in an aim assist session or not.
I play with a controller and aim assist, but I totally get people not wanting it because if you're not using it other players effectively have an aimbot they can use.
Although if I'm getting grief from other players I usually just dynamite them. Like earlier, I was running collectables, came up on another player, said hi to them over voice chat, got some kid literally saying "blue blue blee blee blahh blahh" back, waved at them and their posse member showed up. They fired one arrow and missed, then wounded me with the second (at this point I had a stick of dynamite out and was behind an open door, they were just outside) I tossed the stick out, blew both of them up and they started shouting insults, I then left the session.
Unless you're doing PvP of PvP events then aim assist isn't a huge thing to worry about.
Dynamite arrows also work a charm.
But for whatever reason they are gone.
