Edit: I guess saying "OMg wHY iS tHis NOt woRkiNG" is easier.
If the recipe shows, you should be able to hover over or select it and you should get feedback about why you can't make it, like missing ingredients or you have a full inventory already.
If the recipe doesn't show, you don't know it.
I never had to learn the recipe. I don't know why, though I have some uncharitable guesses. I personally find it confusing to have to guess which of the several possibilities is preventing stuff showing up in the crafting menu. That, added to the fact that the recipe says 'feathers' when it actually needs a specific kind of feather, and that even if I was in the menu back when I had some in my bag, the actual arrows won't be on screen because it only shows four options at a time...
Long story short, crafting is a dumb maze with no signposts, but once I had all the recipes shown I could figure out what it actually wanted.
Glad you got it figured out.
It wasn't until I noticed this teeny tiny little Q & E next to the pistol that I decided to try those and see what would happen. Aha! Now I could grab my shotgun. Just not that intuitive. Most games give a graphic showing what you have and what you can swap with; not a "left / right toggle" so you can switch between what you're carrying and what you can pick up from your saddlebag. Just odd design.
