Lost horse after death
I was leaving St Denis and got attacked by some lemoyne raiders. Died almost instantly. When I respawned, my main horse was different from the one I was using before. I went back to the stable to change to my black arabian, but it was gone. I had purchased this horse in the same play session. I didn't manual save, but after buying it, I did a main mission and some side quests. I'm pretty mad because I spend >$700 on the horse and it's just gone...is there anything i can do?

Sorry BearSaver, I feel for you. If it's gone, I don't think you can do anything about it other than re-load a save game. I almost lost my white Arabian earlier, just south of the Shady Belle mansion, at the Raider hideout. It was like a whole platoon of those bastards were immediately scoring hits on me and my horse, and I was a good distance away, on the trail down by the water. My horse went down, and I lost most of my health in the first few seconds. I got hit like four or five times just trying to revive it, but I was fortunate enough to do it, and get it to flee into the field, away from me before healing myself, and unleashing hell on those ****ers.
It's a good idea to always have a save slot that you update often for things just like that.

If it's the SP there is a potential solution, well two.

Yup, those raiders are the damn worst, I’m already planning my revenge. my last save slot was from a few days ago, and since I’ve been progressing a lot, I’m just gonna let it be...definitely gotta remember to save more often. thanks anyway!

Use a manual save that you had earlier. Save manually often. NEVER reply on the use of any auto-save in any game, as it gets updated and over-written at various random times. It of course saves to the auto-save file whenever you die.

Why would you buy an Arabian?
You can find one for free in St Dennis (Black one)
and a White one out in the Northern Snow region.
Once tamed take it back to a stable and "Stable" it into a slot.
Then saddle it up and go break it in until you reach level 4 bonding with it.

If you don't manually save as you go, well that's on you, as YOU MUST do that and as often as you feel needed. Always do it after you are happy with progress, purchases made, etc. Missions can be replayed later on if you wish after beating them. However purchases of items, horses, saddles, guns/upgrades are critical as far as your money is concerned so be sure to save before buying stuff, then afterwards. This way if you made a purchasing mistake you have a save right before making a major purchase to fall back on.

Yes it's an in game $700 lesson, use lots of saves.

When that switching back to a default horse happened to me I went back to a save.
But I did read online that if you take the default horse outside the town and shoot it, your original horse will be returned. And the second option was as said above, steal the one in St Denis.

If you bought the horse, it should be back at the stable again. Pretty sure you can't lose those. When you first died, it may have given you another random horse because most likely your owned horse was down and requiring horse reviver meds to get it back up. When this occurs, your horse icon will show on map/mini-map as normal but with an added red-cross in the corner of it, letting you know he's down and needs help. If you wait too long, yes it will die and leave your owned saddle there on the ground.

yeah, I was ready to sprint over to where I died, but there was nothing on the map and my saddle was on the default horse. I went over to the stable and my other two horses were there, but no arabian.

No, your saddle never gets moved from horse to horse on its own.
So that IS your horse.

Overall best bet, just reload the older manual save, even if it takes you back a bit. Lesson learned. Save manually more often, never use the Auto save to back-track with.

No need to ever buy an Arabian in Story Mode, it's free, just find it, tame it, level 4 bond with it, take it to Stable to actually save it. Then saddle it.

I always move around the story mode with 2X level 4 bonded horses, its very easy to do this. However only one is your true horse, the one with your saddle on it. I use the 2nd horse I help me carry more killed animals back, such as one for food and one that is just a large skin, such as from Bear, Moose, etc.

From Valentine just head South when it gets hot weather, head South-East
But seriously, just look up the Map Online.

I thought something similar had happened to my horse too. I learnt the hard way, you have to feed your horse often, or it loses weight and looks crap. Not sure about the stable issues though. That is super odd.

Depends on the horse. Shouldn't have to feed it unless the Cores (the white part inside the circle) is dropping past 75-50%

How good those are will depend on the actual Horse breed and your Bonding Level. As the overall stats raise up a bit with each bonding level. It's maxed out once you reach a full bond level 4.

What helps is having at least some lvl 1 stamina booster elixir crafted and use them if you need to do any racing or make a really long non-stop trip with your horse. As the outer white bar reaches very low (don't let it run out) then apply the elixir and it will restore the outer ring and turn to yellow for a while. However if you perform high stamina movements with it, such as alot of jumps, the yellow bar will return to white rather quickly. But otherwise it will help to not only give a full restore to the outer ring, but a good amount of time before it will start dropping again due to actively running.

Every chance you get it does help to Calm and also Brush the Horse.
Dirt and Blood degrades its coat and this effects the health dropping more rapidly over time if you neglect to brush the horse. The best thing to feed it is Wild Carrots, which you can easily find all over the map. If you run out, feed it Hay, as this is very cheap to stock up on at Stables, but also does a good job at restoring both Cores.

I lost two horses to crap. First got shot down by lawmen and using the reviver didn't work as I died as the animation was taking place. Second just got itself hurt and killed during the final Gray/Braithwaite lovers mission during the train section. I should have quit the game and gone back into a checkpoint but I lost my black Arabian.

Quiting the game never helps; as the game actually will wait until it has saved onto the "Autosave" slot before closing the game. If you quit before dying during a mission going all bad, that is one thing. But if you die, the autosave gets updated so you would load-in after that death. So for most scenarios, the autosave is not ever good to rely on.

Manually save often, such as prior to starting any interactions with white dots or with various characters, starting a mission, etc. This way you'll have a manual save to fall back on should things go terribly wrong and overall you wouldn't be set back too far if you make a proper habbit of doing this. Never rely on the "AutoSave"

If you are in a mission and rage-quit or whatever. Or just find yourself exiting the game without manually saving to a slot, the autosave will most likely be used often enough to where the next time you load up the game and continue story mode, the autosave is what will be loaded. If you wish to avoid the game loading from the autosave upon next game launch, go to the folder where it saves the save-game-slots and delete #15 prior to launching the game. This will then load the last manual save you made instead.

#15 is always used for the "AutoSave" slot in RDR2
