No thanks to Mr Snowflake here...
Hmm I have the opposite experience. It seems to me like most missions give you a fair degree of freedom, and there are only a handful that are on literal rails (because that's how the story was scripted)
The cousins dying is part of the story though. IIRC there's even dialogue in the following cutscene about Beau being the last of his family.
When it's part of the actual storyline, it's no wonder why the game doesn't allow you the freedom to bypass that event. The cousins have to die.
Imagine a scene where X character has to die, and all the dialogue afterwards is the group mourning the loss of X character. It would be pretty broken if you could "save" that character and then get all the dialogue of them being dead.
Or you could just use the menu. No need to kill yourself first.
It's just been my own personal observation about RDR2 that when I think something is designed poorly (so far at least) it has been my own fault or my inability to see the big picture that's the problem.
Other than a few wonky control designs, and Arthur putting weapons away during critical moments of the game, the devs put a ton of thought into crafting such an epic masterpiece. Almost 99% of the time when I thought, Hey this would be cool to be able to do.. It's in there already, I just didn't see it.
And THAT is the mission that drives you to rant ?
Peace pal - the game definitely has issues.
