this game is crashing Partially because of vram leak
My pc specs are
Cpu 5800x
Gpu strix lc 6900xt
Ram 32gb
Mobo x570
Hdd 12tb
Ssd 1tb
Win10

All drivers and windows are up to date.

I have been playing the game for about 80hrs so far on the rockstar launcher, and the game will crash randomly! Anywhere from at launch to 3 hours in.i have tried all of the suggested "fixes" that you will find online with none of them besides deleting all files but the settings.xml in "Documents/Rockstar Games/Red Dead Redemption 2/Settings" have had any impact whatsoever.

Today I decided to keep msi afterburner running and have both my system ram and the gpu vram displaying while I played as I Suspected a memory leak was causing the Majority my crashes.

I am playing at 4k near max settings and at start up the game is using 5.5gb of both vram and system ram.

i stayed in and around Strawberry for a bounty hunt,to find the giant Skeleton and cave painting, then I roamed all around that side of the map for roughly 2hrs or so looking for some wild life.

In that time both my system ram and vram went from 5.5gb to 12.6gb but I noticed that as I inched outside of town more my vram continued to climb while my system ram stayed at 12.6gb.

So I decided to make a trip to the other side of the map to test and sure enough my vram continued to climb, never decreasing at all.by the time I got to the swamps my vram was at 15.4gb.i hit the pause button and Bam it completely locked up and I had to "control +alt+delete " and bring up the task manager to shut down the game.

Red dead 2 clearly has an issue handling its vram usage where as you travel from Section to section of the map it loads in new stuff but never deletes anything.

I looked around online but I haven't found anyone else talking about this.

To anyone else dealing with crashes past start up I suggest that you run msi afterburner and have it setup to show your vram usage. As the vram gets to within 10-20% of your gpus max vram save your game then do a full restart of the game to avoid these types of crashes.

same GPU,CPU, mobo CHipset. Same Vram issues. Do you have SAM enabled?

This game has been running smooth as butter for me with Vulkan as the preferred choice for years up until recently where screen would just freeze and continue off and on for a bit.

Went back into graphics settings and the game swapped back to DX12. A recent update changed my settings.

Since I moved back to Vulkan, running great again.

i run perfectly on my I5 + GTX1660 Super + 2tb of storage

Half and half so SAM isn't the problem. It's the game engine NOT Wiping old Vram data as you move from section to section of the map.

If you stay in the same area or die alot you could play for hours with no issues.but I rarely die and I move around the map ALOT.

What I started doing was to save the game, then reload that save.doing so wipes the vram and allows you to play crash free but you just have to keep msi afterburner running and an eye on your vram usage..

Tried both Vulcan and DX12 and if anything dx12 crashes quicker..

Running smooth isn't the issue. I'm near max settings in 4k at a locked 60fps.

The game engine lacks Proper Vram management and I suspect that 4k combined with me rarely dieing AND Traversing the map as often as I do is why the vram fills up so quickly.

Regardless Rockstar should have coded the engine to wipe the vram.as it is now the game will literally try to store EVERYTHING about its self completely unchecked within Vram, and for me atleast once it gets up around 15gb I've had my whole pc bluescreen with the windows :( ,black screen, driver crash, completely shutdown and restart my pc,crash the game and throw up error codes and a whole host of other crashes.

But since I realized what was going on and started saving then reloading that save when my vram gets to around 12gb I've had ZERO crashes..

You are most likely playing at 1080p or lower and at that resolution the vram usage will be much smaller then compared to 4k and or maybe this bug doesn't happen on lower settings and or resolutions..

I don't think you understand how the game manages memory is all. Your system is crashing, sure. But not due to memory management.

Did you even read the OP?

In real time I watched the Vram climb to nearly 16gb from simply riding my horse across the map.not a single time did the game clear any of that vram,THAT IS A TEXT BOOK MEMORY LEAK!! And it's happening because the games engine IS NOT Purging any older unnecessary data out of the vram.

Now if this is a bug only on Amd cards,or at 4k,or only Max settings idk I haven't tested it that far.but if you search online you will find a TON of people that have crashing issues with this game.

Since I Discovered this,I now save and then Immediately reload that save, and again watch in real time as the game clears the vram while reloading and I've had ZERO CRASHES since doing this.

Yet somehow I have misunderstood something?

The end user should NOT have to run 3rd party software and keep track of this sorta information just to play the game.

Stuff like this is what is wrong with the gaming industry. These devs release half baked products that require the end user to fix or find work arounds just to use the product they spent full price for and NOTHING happens to these companies.

Instead of saying I am mistaken or that I do not understand, why don't you run your own tests and try and disprove me with Evidence?

This must explain my crashes lately. Black screening or freezing sometimes after 5 minutes, sometimes after 30 plus. The strange thing is that I never crashed like this on my first play-through back in 2019. How they could patch the game and screw up VRAM management is beyond me. 5900X, 3080. I am using the Rockstar launcher, not steam.

Yup i recommend, pirating your paid version back to 1.0, all the online updates has made the game insanely unstable, i have gotten nearly 500 crashes from start to chapter 2.

When game came out i had zero crashes.

I play it on a GTX 1070 with a mix of Medium / High settings at 1080p with DX12 API, never had any crash issues

Perhaps its Vulkan causing the problem? give DX12 a try and see if that helps, I don't see any mention of it in your OP

Same here, I've got a GTX 1080 and have most of my settings at ultra/high at 2560x1440 QHD and have no issues when playing for 5-6+ hours at a time . . .

I was getting some micro-stutters at times, but switched back to DX12 and updated my drivers and that fixed it for me.

My system is a 4.2ghz i7-7700K with 32GB of ram and liquid cooling, so it can take the load with no strain, but I haven't noticed any issue at all with vram leaks . . .maybe your GPU is the issue?

Uhm.. :Grineer: have you made sure your RAM is compatible with ur mobo? and that you're not OCed? cuz im running my craptastic I7-5930k, 16gb ram, GTX 1080 and X99A GAMING 7 mobo at 2560x1440p and ive NEVER had any issues with the game besides when Rockstar failed their own updates. yeah my rig is quite dated, and i can run the game fine on medium/high to ultra settings. same with most other newer titles i can run them just fine on medium to high. and yes i know you said vram, which is GPU related. but do check ur RAM aswell. but maybe try going down from 4k.
