why does RDR2 look so bad, even on highest settings?
Hi, I recently got RDR2 ultimate edition on my PC because I completed it on my xbox when it launched and I absolutely loved it,

My pc is pretty powerful, 2080 super, ryzen 9 3900x, and 64GB of 3200mhz ram.

so instinctively, I download it and turn everything to ultra, even advanced settings, 16X AA, ultra texture resolution,
the only main thing i did was change vulkan to DX12.

The hair and beards look super choppy, almost like old gen console graphics.

i got an xbox series x of christmas 2020 as a gift to myself, and it looks near similar to max PC settings, I had only wanted higher framerate and a good excuse to redownload the game for a second playthrough.
the game looks good, just not amazing, nothing I can do will fix how ugly the beards are and how hideous the grass and terrain texture is.

What monitor size and resolution?

Can you provide screenshots? Have you check if your PC is using the correct graphic card for the game? Sometimes, Windows 10 uses the integrated graphic card for some games.

Pretty sure he'd run into fps issues all across the board and not just choppy beards/grass textures if his integrated card was used.

1080P 25' monitor, I get less fps than the average benchmarks for the 2080 super shows on 1080p, on balanced graphics with a few settings turned off I get 50-80 FPS that fluctuates, graphics are pretty bad but I wanted something more than 60

not using integrated graphics, that I'm sure of, i just get less FPS than usual, 50-80 on balanced graphics in the graphics quality scaler, I was hoping for something like that but on max graphics.

I have a 2080 non-super, and I'm playing the game at 1440p with textures at ultra and all other settings at high using "balanced" dlss. The game looks incredibly beautiful to me, and I get rock solid 60 fps. The hair is the only thing that is a little odd. If I were you, I'd use Nvidia DSR to set your in-game resolution to 1440p, and try my settings. It should make a nice improvement in image quality.

Latest patch is broken, the game will reset some settings.

Yeah i'm getting it too, but just with the hair. It's like i'm seeing black pixels mixed in with the hair. Makes the hair incredibly odd.

which settings do you use? where would I turn 1440p on in DSR?

I mentioned my settings in my last message. All settings at high, except textures at ultra and dlss at balanced. To use DSR, go into your nvidia control panel, click on the "manage 3d settings" tab on the left, and then click the "global settings" tab in the center of the control panel. Scroll down until you see "DSR-Factors" and enable all the checkmark boxes it shows in the list. Then just below that, I recommend setting "DSR smoothness" to 19%. Then hit apply in the lower right hand corner. This will give you a bunch of new higher-resolutions that you can play at once you are back in the game. One of the resolutions should be 2560x1440 or at least a resolution very close to that (I don't have a 1080p monitor to test, but that should be the case). I also recommend using vulkan instead of dx12.

That might be a brightness issue, what brightness do you use?

Probably because you're playing at 1080p, bump that resolution up with resolution scale.
