Best Way to Hunt and NOT damage
Is there a way to prevent the pelt and the animal from being too damaged, causing 1 star rating and selling for 1 dollar?

Should I be using my bow and arrows? I feel since I haven't played in forever, I saw I had a bow and I'm like, why? I think I've forgotten how to play, 😂

For large animals you need a high damage rifle that kills with one headshot like the Carcano or bolt action rifle. for small animals I don't know but I think small game arrow or varmint rifle but it never worked for me

It depends on the size of the animal. The compendium tells you which weapon to use.

I've never noticed it tells you what to use. In my whole experience, not once I've seen it tell me. 😑

hunt large animal with bolt action rifle, middle size animal with bow and normal arrow, for animal smaller than fox use hunting rifle (.22) or hunting arrow. Always aim for head

or you can use lasso to kill herbivore that smaller than bison and bigger than fox ( personal favorite, wish this game release a native american DLC someday)

You pretty much just need a rolling block or carcano rifle. They will kill any of the larger animals with one head or heart shot, and don't ruin the pelt. For small game, varmint rifle or small game arrows.

Keep in mind that by "small game", this game means animals roughly the size of a bird or smaller. There's a lot of small animals that are still too big for the varmint to kill without multiple shots, I think you have to use a bow for them, but I wouldn't be surprised if any medium damage weapon worked. You pretty much just need to kill the animal with once shot to not ruin the pelt.

Use scope or binoculars to see if an animal has good pelt rating to begin with

I've been using my Repeater rifle for deer or Foxes, which, was a complete waste of time, cause every time, the pelt is poor quality. Hi, I'm Arthur Morgan, and I can't hunt properly. Dutch: Da$# it, Arthur!

For a fox the repeater is actually the correct choice.

One shot headshot with correct weapon, if it's anything bigger than small game you can also lasso it and then do a kill animation when you get next to it that will not damage the pelt as well.

Just one good stab or you'll ruin the pelt.
