How do you PROPERLY groom your horse?

I keep getting a red indicator on my horse's health that my horse needs to be groomed. I've groomed it for short periods of time, didn't do anything. I've groomed it for long periods of time, didn't do anything. There isn't any indication that I did it right besides maybe Arthur going "halfway done, boy" after doing it for a long period of time, but I'm just so confused. What am I missing?

just a guess: You have another horse that needs grooming?

that means your horse needs food,
not that it needs to be brushed.

brushing is only to remove visible dirt.

Use horse brush while idle sitting on horse(using it off the horse sometimes cuts the animation short which doesn't clean the horse) buy a horse care package from stable or ride through deepish water.

Based on other replies, I presume thats a joke relating to a side quest activity I'll get later? Assuming I find it, I shall return when my sense of humor has been enlightened.

Bruh, there's literally a red indicator in this game which indicates that your horse is dirty and it appears on health icon

Bruh, there's literally a red indicator in this game which indicates that your horse is dirty and it appears on health icon

perhaps it impacts the Drain rate for health and max health stats, i'll agree with that.
but the op clearly said he brushed the horse several times.
so then the horse needs to be fed.
brushing a horse will still only remove the dirt, and not magicaly restore its health.

I didnt mean it as a joke. I had the same thought playing and thought it could be another horse.
