I found this and it helped me a lot to figure out stuff. Even posted some in my review.
https://www.yekbot.com/red-dead-redemption-2-keyboard-controls/
I don't want to have to use my controller because I much prefer mouse and keyboard for games like this. But whereas with Fallout 4 the PC mouse and keyboard controls are flawless, as in nearly all other PC games like Halflife 2 etc, in this game they are really nonsense and random.
I mean you use E to select something and then R to put it back? WTF? Why not just press E again?
It's half making me want to give in and go play something else and I am only 2 hrs in. I can see the game is really deep from all the options but I just hope the terrible controls don't put me off.
I mean the bit with the wolves where they attack you in the snow - I am trying to point my sawn off shotgun at them and the aiming isnt working at all! And then a few seconds later the aiming is back! I mean WTF?
And the horse steering? How the hell do I steer it? I mean surely the easiest thing in the game you would think? But no! The horse wants to go all over the place. Do I have to press Q all the time or can I let go of Q, the horse stops then and doesnt keep up despite me tapping left shift as it suggested.
But when I want to horse to stop I cant get it to stop?
I mean jesus! What the hell is up with this game?
I just tried to play some more. Honestly, it's like a continual cut scene you interact with a bit.
Really wanted to like this. The story seems great...but, damn.
Cyberpunk soon anyways I guess. ;)
It's really meant to be played on a controller.
I hear the first part in the snow is a tutorial of sorts, once you get out of that it opens up a lot. Supposedly!
Yes correct, Free roam gets unlocked on chapter 2 and ya have the whole valley to explore, stay outta the permanent Red Zones though cause they are restricted
Town and Border red zones can be fixed by paying the bounty at any post office
I move my mouse wheel left I get my left sidearm, right and I get right sidearm, middle button gets me duel, mouse wheel up goes to ads and scope & down holsters.
I have 3 thumb buttons, rear reloads, front 2 are long arm binds. I have 2 buttons on top beside left click that used to be mouse sensitivity but rebound them to page up and page down so can use for menu controls and one behind the mouse wheel bound to whistle horse.
Leaving me wsad and all the keys around it for move and interaction. Everything I need quick access to is one button removed from wsad or on the mouse.
If you cant find an intuitive setup on your K& M you simply have not thought through your purchases or lack imagination to bind keys intuitively.
And not to mention, the controls get a lot better too. When you're in the snow at the beginning everything feels super sluggish because of the deep snow. Plus Nite69 is right, half of the keys in this game aren't really important.
The lack of manual saving though is a pain as well. Just when you come from easily controllable/save anywhere games like Fallout 4 to this its takes some dedication to stick with it.
I hope the canned animation dies down a bit as well later on, the story is cool but all the canned animation detracts a bit as you feel you dont have any choices at all.
