Horse automatically slows down when passing another horse/NPC
When going alongside someone else (NPC), my horse automatically adjust his speed to the NPC.
I've looked into the settings but could not find anything.
Is this a setting? Or maybe a bug?
If it's a bug, it's annoying :lunar2019madpig:
Thanks! :steamhappy:

it is normal behaviour for horses to do that when you pass other horses too close,
try passing them not to close or they will try to rub sides.

Takes a while to get used to, but it is there for a reason... whether this was the best way of doing it is open for debate.

Only way to prevent this is to overtake at a slightly greater distance, if possible.

Based on the animation physics, wildlife behavior and horse riding animations. Rockstar obviously went for realism > function. Am with ya, takes getting used to but it's what sets this game apart from the competition.

It has to do with realism??? I thought it was so we could jump to other horses more easily. I don't know anything about horses... do they really do this IRL?

From a gameplay perspective they could have simply made a buttonpress to match speed.

When you overtake at full speed, the mechanic does not kick in... I really doubt this has to do with realism.

Some obviously missed the making of Red Dead on youtube.

They had motion capture sensors taped on real horses doing their stuff.

Wonder what games like Skyrim and Dragon Age Inquisition used to animate their horses? My little pony cardboard cutouts maybe??

This is by far the best horse game out there. Even better than games that focus specifically on horse training like Barbie Horse Adventure. Like, how many other games with horses actually give your horse details like bawls that shrink in the cold? Certainly not no ♥♥♥♥♥♥' Dynasty Warriors, I tell y'hwat.

I grew up around horses irl, Horses are a holes.

Also you can hold A or PC equivalent of A button to "match speed" although is can be a little finicky but that's horses for ya.

Do horses sack really shrivel in the cold in this game? I'll have to take out my binoculars and inspect them next time I ride up into the snow. :steammocking:

On the topic of a-hole horses

Bout 10 years back was at my buddy's dad's ranch and they had 2 horses and a pony. The pony was small (duh) but stocky. Pony would give kids and adult females rides around the ranch etc. One day their overweight uncle tried to get on and the pony bucked him off soon as he got one foot in the stirrup, hilarious!

Just goes to show horses/pony have a mind of their own and are aware of stuff going around them. If they don't like something they will react.

So it HAS to do with realism after all... I had no idea.
Closest I've ever been to a horse was Mr. Ed.

I'd say that's specism or whatever you call it. I think horses have all types of personalities. Often it depends on how they were treated, bit like RD horses.

But it is annoying when horse slows and you have no intention of jumping to it. Because when I try to do that with a horse, say wild one, I want to jump to, it's the opposite, you get like a slim chance.

What setting would it be?
A slider for 'Horse slow downiness'?

I can't believe some people believe this stupid feature is related to realism! It's obviously to make it easier to steal a horse. Using motion capture on real horses has nothing to do with them slowing down next to other riders so why even use that argument? Obvious is obvious, and don't try to make it into something that it's not. Rockstar, for all the good things they put in this game, also made some really bad decisions that they have no intention of changing, because they don't seem to give a rat's ass about what the players think of controllability. For example, horses slowing down gradually despite giving maximum stick input is just retarded. It's a analog stick!!! If you wanted to slow down you could just let back on the stick a bit! With keyboard the horse DOESN'T slow down after you've ticked up to your desired speed, so why the #$%& should it with a gamepad!?
If you couldn't tell already this "feature" makes me seriously pissed!
