Game crashes when applying graphics changes in the settings
For some reason when I change any of the settings the game black screens and crashes. Has anyone else experienced this? I can't seem to find a fix for it.

Ok, me, too. DX 12 causes me the same issues as you have under VULKAN. What I can recommend is to disable the full screen optimisation of the launcher. Delete everything under documents/Rockstargames... (Don't know if it's the same path at steam). It's there where you'll find the settings xml. The launch of the game will take longer caused by building cache new but maybe this can help. It's "amazing" that this game still causes so much issues... As I said I'm not able to get DX 12 to work properly and I'm on Nvidia, too.

The Vram on your gpu holds the key, check in RDR2 graphics settings every resolution uses a certain amount of Vram if exceeded hen game crashes.

Is it fixed with the information you get? Would be helpful if others look here for solutions.

As a work around I just changed the settings in the system.xml file. I'm not sure what's causing it yet. When I raise or lower any setting and apply the changes the game will ctd. If I find a fix I'll be sure to post it here.

Graphics Card? Are you on VULKAN or DX12?

I have an RTX 2060, and I'm using Vulkan. The game has always worked better for me with Vulkan.
The author of this thread has indicated that this post answers the original topic.

I deleted the cache files like you suggested, and it fixed my issue. Thank you

1) regedit Computer\HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\DriverSearching
set param "SearchOrderConfig" to 0

2) Control Panel -> Hardware and Sound -> Devices and Printers
right click on your computer -> device installation settings, set to "no"

3) delete drivers with latest DDU (delete Vulkan Runtime check) in safe mode,

4) delete sga* cache fiiles from "Documents\Rockstar Games\Red Dead Redemption 2\Settings"

5)Install latest nvidia drivers
seems work

Same here.
My VGA GPU is RTX 4090, and it just takes so much time to apply settings. I tried many times.
Finally I was able to apply settings. I ran the benchmark. It looked fine, working.
But when I ran the game next time, bomb, it said 'out of memory, blah blah.' and it reset everything.
A game that is unable to apply settings?

You have your Windows PageFile set to Auto/System Managed; that is why it has this issue.

Really?
But no, it is not.
I set my Virtual Memory 102400 MB.
If you know nothing, just keep silent.

Did you set everything to Ultra in-game? That can be a problem; regardless of specs.

It's a know bug that settings Reflections above Medium can randomly crash the game.

It's also a known bug that game can randomly crash at launch whenever DLSS is enabled.

Why would you set the PageFile to 100 GB; that's just ridiculous and you're wasting precious SSD space.
