Red Dead Redemption 2
RDR2 CPU or GPU intensive?
My current build consists of an 8086k OC'd to 5GHZ and a 1080ti Asus Strix OC Edition running on a PG279q 1440p monitor. I'm a little late to the "game" and was wondering if the game is more GPU or CPU intensive because I am planning on getting a non-reference 3080ti (or whatever it will be called) when they release and am hoping that will increase my performance. I'm hoping to run on ultra settings but am not sure if that's achievable (as I have not been paying attention to RDR2 until now and am not sure whether it's one of those games where hardly anyone will be able to run it at ultra or not). To get to Ultra (if possible), would the new GPU do it? Or would I have to upgrade my CPU again to achieve what I want? Also, is 144fps+ possible or is that too greedy for a game like this?

This is one of those games where it pushes the limits. CPU should be fine, a new gpu would help I'm sure but may not be worth it. You just have to sit down and test settings in game to see if you can get 144 fps with visual quality that you can live with.

Look up Hardware Unboxed's youtube video on RDR2 PC settings. I've had good luck with those options and good performance.

All that said, the latest patch for PC has borked things for many of us and the online multiplayer version of the game is buggy right now to say the least, well more than usual.
compaired to other games i'd say, RDR2 is extreme on both cpu and gpu
GPU by far. Its hard to state what the cpu change would do but even with a 2080ti and a 9000series cpu, on whatever settings you go for, you would see the gpu top out at 100% usage and the cpu only hitting 30%-50%, example here:

The 3000series GPU's might get you there, but until theres some solid benchmarks out there after release nobody has any clue. Personally, I think the 3000series will get you into the 80's maybe 100's but nowhere near a 144fps lock.

It's really a wonder how they got it to run as well as it did on PS4... PS4 hardware is flippin' oooooooooooooooooooooooooooooold!

Because the graphics settings on PS4 are the equivalent of a "lower than lowest" setting on PC for most of them.

Is there anyway I can revert the patch back to when it was better?

No - Rockstar requires you to have the latest game version to be able to connect. Updates are automatic, theres no going back.

I would say GPU. I have an old CPU : Xeon X5550 2.67 Ghz and a good GPU : GTX 1660. It's working very fine.

Is the new patch affecting fur textures? I just encountered wolves at the beginning of the story and they look terrible.
Not sure on fur. I just went and did a full uninstall and DDU safe mode wipe of graphics drivers to see if that helps my random game crashes.
GPU, but if you have hardware the is more than a few years old you may need and upgrade to play a high settings. If your GPU has 4GB of VRAM you will struggle with texture streaming.

I'm experiencing this. https://imgur.com/a/KJsn3O0
Weird. I haven't had that problem.

Edit: Tonight, I did see some birds that had solid blue colored blocks on their wings when dead on ground or carried on shoulder.

144fps is indeed far too greedy for a game of this fidelity.
