most profitable role on online?
for a money hungry guy

Personally, I just use collector as a way to get cash as I'm running around. Sometimes, it results in good cash, sometimes not, but over time, it adds up. Other people have made a ton of money by just doing "collector runs" using the online map, but then that's basically all you're doing, and the recent update makes that not work anywhere near as well, because you can't rely on which collectible is where anymore, just where a collectible is. https://github.com/jeanropke/RDR2CollectorsMap

Once you've ranked up enough in trader, you can get $625 for a long distance delivery, though with it taking 2 minutes to produce each good and needing to do supply runs, it ends up taking close to 4 hours for a full delivery to be ready, so you can't rush it. It does allow you to make good money while doing other stuff though. Check out the info here if you want the details on trader: https://www.reddit.com/r/RedDeadTraders/comments/dev0dr/red_dead_online_trader_role_materials_value_list/

Moonshiner is decent for cash once you've ranked up enough to use the strong moonshine, since then with the better recipes, you can make over $200 a delivery, and by that point, it only takes about 40 minutes for the moonshine to be ready, but you have to do multiple bootlegger missions if you want the mash price to be low enough to be reasonable. And early on, it's very hard to make much money with moonshiner, because you don't get enough per delivery with the weaker mash, and you haven't learned to drive the wagon well enough to avoid breaking the bottles.

Really, alternating between doing trader and moonshiner stuff while snatching up collectibles as you find them is probably the most profitable setup overall, though it takes time to get the roles that high.

Naturalist can be okay for cash, but it's a royal pain, and pretty much the only way to get good cash is to go after legendary animals. None of the rest of the role gets you much cash.

Bounty hunter is very poor for cash, so don't do it for cash. Unlike the other roles, it gives you gold, but the gold payout for bounty missions is the same as for stranger missions, so if it's the gold you want, you can just do stranger missions. Ultimately, you do bounty hunting, because you like bounty hunting, not because the pay is good. The bounty hunting payout rates are described here: https://www.reddit.com/r/RedDeadOnline/comments/e4mwj9/bounty_hunter_payouts_and_tips/?utm_medium=android_app&utm_source=share

If I were starting out right now, I'd save up for the current outlaw pass (since its rewards get you back the gold that it costs you), and then I'd do trader and collector at the same time to build up cash (doing daily challenges along the way to continue to build my gold up). After that, I'd do moonshiner, and then I'd either do bounty hunter or naturalist, though you'll probably want to get naturalist by the time the current outlaw pass expires, since you get a bunch of XP coupons for it from the outlaw pass rewards. Beyond that, there's no hurry.

The most profitable role for your soul is the one you enjoy. Never forget that, my friend.

I enjoy shooting bad guys in the face, so bounty hunter and naturalist (for the poacher hunts). This said, collector will make you tons of cash and a 100 loaded long distance trader haul will net you $650 a haul.

Ride around with your metal detector out if you get collector and once you unlock. You will stumble up on all kinds of good stuff without even using a map. I found at least half a dozen things yesterday while commuting.

Also look at the player perk unlocks that come with the roles. They may influence your decision.
