Hmm, I don't know, the wording doesn't suggest that, it specifically says from animals in perfect condition, so to me that means the animal needs to be 3* after you kill it, so in my mind it means you'd get a chance at a pseudo 4* pelt from the kill if that makes sense. Unless they did indeed word it wrong and what you say could be how it actually works.
I just don't want to blow nearly $800 on it without knowing exactly what it does.
When you miss the vital part, you still have the change that the 3 star stays a 3 star.
So when you shoot a PERFECT (3star) animal, you get the change that if your don't hit it PERFECT, you still get the PERFECT hide ;)
