Please read this before complaining RDR2 is not working (FIX)....
Formerly: Recent RDR2 update Possible Solutions I, II, and II... FIX HERE

Formaly: Could you try this? or, not.... Possible Solution I, II, and II...

Possible Solution I, worked for a few people that could NOT load RDR2 past the intro (dropped out at or before the intro, didn't load at all, or locked up the system).

-------------------------------------------------Possible Solution I

You can Change it under :

C:\Users\Username\Documents\Rockstar Games\Red Dead Redemption 2\Settings

Then you open system.xml an Change

<API>kSettingAPI_DX12</API>
to
<API>kSettingAPI_VULKAN</API>

if you cant start the game.

OR, if Settings.xml already has VULKAN selected, then change it to DX12......

<API>kSettingAPI_VULKAN</API>
to
<API>kSettingAPI_DX12</API>

Edit: I did some editing and added line spacings so it's easier to read, Jed.

-------------------------------------------------Possible Solution II

If you can NOT load the game, then you could try deleting the system.xml file (or cut and paste it to another folder). When you load the game again, the game will create a NEW system.xml file itself, with all default graphics settings. Play the game with it's own default graphics settings, don't make changes to graphics settings. Some have tried this and it worked for them.

EDIT: RECOMMENDED

-------------------------------------------------Possible Solution III

This worked for me.

If you can NOT load the game at all, you could try deleting and reinstall Steam, Rockstar Launcher, AND the game. Yip, all three. But...

Use IObit Uninstaller to uninstall Steam, Rockstar Launcher and the game, because it completely removes any program, completely, including Registry entries. Make sure to choose the FREE version, not the Trial version.

IObit Uninstaller 9 Free:
https://www.iobit.com/en/advanceduninstaller.php

Use CCleaner's Registry Cleaner to clean out any outdated/residual Registry entries just to make sure.

CCleaner:
https://www.ccleaner.com

Reboot and reinstall Steam, Rockstar Launcher, and finally RDR2. I know some of you have done this, but....

-------------------------------------------------End

After the update, on first load of the game I got a black screen bottom half, then it locked up. I rebooted and ran CCleaner (Free), and Reimage Repair Plus (paid version) and all's working fine now. There is a free version of Reimage Repair (link below), but it has no auto-clean function (manual clean only). In fact I recommend this program, it's the only program I've paid for in 39 years (except for games of course)... oh, and except for QRAM (but that's another story).

Reimage Repair:
http://www.reimageplus.com

Please try one or all of the solutions, any feedback (except abuse) is welcome.... oh, jokes are cool. I'll check back in a few. Good luck, and I hope this helps someone.

NOTE: If you can NOT use Notepad, Copy & Paste or download programs, then do NOT attempt this, please. I will not explain how to do it.

Now ya'll, see ya on the range, or up in the high country (where I hang out mostly).

Jed.

PS: We all know RS is crap, money hungry nit-wits, don't need to hear it again. We all know updates are the pits, don't need to hear that one again. Just try a solution, if it works great... if not, then your really no worse off, hey.

PSS: I'm so tired, so if there are any typing mistakes... let me know.

PSS: I know the game burps, farts and scratches it's own arsss, don't need to hear it again.... and so does my horse. LOL!

EDIT: Spelling correction.

Bump!

As a last resort, check your system logs in Event Viewer... it may have something that helps.

I actually like Advanced System Care by IOBit WAY better than CCleaner. So much I've been using the pro version for years.

Yes, I use ASC (free version) too... it does a lot more than CCleaner, but not when it comes to the Registry.... in my opinion. But, it would be the second program I would pay for, maybe I will one day.

I changed from Vulkan to DX12. This has been working the past 3-4 hours. No more crashing. For now all seems to work for me. Thank you! Much appreciated.

RDR2 is running fine on my system. I do not launch the game from Steam, I launch the game from the AMD Software application. Can you try this? And thank you for your feedback.

EDIT: Please try Possible Solution II

Solution 1 worked for me, however the file name is "system.xml" not "settings.xml", I just removed it and let the game create a new one.
