But yea, you saved the dude, and he is returning the favour. As for shop being closed and you coming back later on? Im not sure about that. Whenever I met this dude the shop was open, so I just went in, opened the catalogue and picked a gun/rifle or whatever. I never used or bought things off the shelf, maybe that is the problem?
It really shouldn't matter that you came back a bit later, but this game has some fincky and wierd things so... Is there any way you can load older save and try again?
At the end of the day, money is not a big issue in SP, so I wouldn't worry too much about it.
You might encounter the event again just because you didn't take a freebie but I wouldn't want to count on that possibility and be wrong. But even though it's one of the highest value freebies that the game gives you, none of the guns are so expensive that they would be worth redoing hours of progress for.
Sell a decent wagon. Loot a few corpses. Sell the valuables. Snag some animal carcasses even if they are just on the way to something else that you wanted to do. You will offset the difference mostly by doing things that you were going to do anyway.
The shop was open, even after hours when I met this dude. BUT, as soon as I got free gun and left. I realized I wanted to pimp some other stuff so I tried to walk back through the door and the shop was closed.
