RDR2 not working with controller after newest update.
Yesterday I was playing with my xbox controller and everything was fine until I turned the game off for the update. When I turned it back on after the update the game would crash immediately every time it recognized that steam had a controller attached to it.

At first I thought it was RDR2 update so I performed the 'verify file integrity' option. I made sure my graphics driver is up to date. Then I considered it might be the Rockstar Games Launcher so I launched GTA5 through Rockstar Launcher(no steam involved) and it was perfectly fine. I also tested my controller in a few games from epic games and they all ran perfectly fine too.

Next I considered that my xbox controller might somehow be at fault(as irrational as that sounds) so I tried playing RDR2 with my PS4 controller. Same result, RDR2 would crash the moment steam would establish the controller connection in game.

I then disconnected the controller and made sure that neither xbox nor PS4 was connected. The game runs fine in this mode.

I played Resident Evil 3 in steam with a controller and it works perfectly fine.

I've come to the conclusion that this is most likely some sort of steam-RDR2 hybrid issue.

Has anyone else had this happen? Does anyone have any ideas for how to fix this? Thanks in advance for any advice.

Anyone ever resolve this? It's driving me crazy. It will work for weeks, then suddenly decide to stop. I haven't found any pattern, and after resyncing PS4 and Switch Pro controllers with my computer, changing Steam controllers settings back and forth, and messing with every setting imaginable again and again, I'm losing my mind.

Nope, I just gave up on RDR2. At this point I've accepted that Rockstar stole $70 from me and has no intention of giving me a refund or fixing this problem. I haven't played RDR2 in over 8 months. I've uninstalled RDR2 and GTA5 and will never support them again. They will literally never see a dime of my money. My kids will grow up and never play their games either. I will make sure of this.

Guys, I have found one more solution. It helped me for the xbox one controller.
1)Go into the Big Picture;
2)In the library, select RDR2 and go to "Manage shortcut";
3)Then go to "Controller Options" and disable the "Allow desktop Configuration in Launcher" checkbox;
Then click play and it's done.
P.s: two small details:
*in the main controller settings, I have the "Xbox Settings" checkbox;
*this can be done even if rdr2 is not purchased through Steam, just add it to the steam library as a non-steam game;

It's exactly 7 days since I created this thread. This whole week I've had the same issue with RDR2 specifically.

A quick-fix that can be applied is to go into big picture mode>settings>controller and UNCHECK ALL CONTROLLER SUPPORT options.

The downside to this fix is now my controller is laggy/buggy in this game. Sometimes it takes a few clicks of 'Y' to get on the horse, sometimes the joypads have poor latency and sometimes it displays playstation buttons.

I have been playing witcher 3 all week and my controller is just fine and everything works just fine with xbox controller support enabled in steam.

ALSO, a friend of mine went on vacation and asked if I can maintain her dailies streak in RDR2 while she's gone. I logged into her steam account and played RDO WITH MY XBOX controller.

Afterwards I went into her steams big picture mode and discovered that xbox controller support was enabled the ENTIRE TIME.

So, now I have learned that this issue isn't even an issue everyone experiences. It's somehow account specific!?!?!????

The year is 2023 an Rockstar STILL hasn't fixed it.
However, this note from discussion's author is important.
So, my troubleshooting for this particular issue is: l̲o̲g̲ ̲o̲u̲t̲ ̲a̲n̲d̲ ̲l̲o̲g̲ ̲i̲n̲ Yeah, that simple. You can even just change account back and forth (if there's multiple accounts logged in on your device).
P.s. sorry, if my english is bad, it's not my native language.
