Black Screen ONLY after killing the last guy at Fort Mercer

So I'm just finishing up my final exploration after the epilogue (going for 100%) and I've run into a strange issue where as soon as I kill the last guy at Fort Mercer, who is always operating the gatling gun at the back, the screen just goes black and I can no longer play. I can still hear music and whatnot in the background, almost as if it's trying to load a cutscene or something, but nothing ever happens. I have to force close the game. None of the "fixes" mentioned about black screen issues elsewhere online have done anything.

The first time it happened I thought it might just be a freak occurrence, but I've tried 3 times now and the same exact thing happened each time. Any ideas? I can just avoid trying to clear the fort for now, as I have other things to do still, but I really would like to finish it at some point. I've had NO other issues with the game whatsoever up until now.

Specs: i7 4790k, GTX 1070 (driver 446.14), 32GB RAM, multiple SSDs (game installed on secondary RAID 0 array), I get anywhere from 50-80 fps on medium/high settings @ 1440p. This rig is almost 6 years old now, but I really doubt it's a hardware issue. Yeah I know it's getting old, but I think in 125+ hours of gameplay that something else would have happened by now if that was the case. Plus, the issue is way too consistent.

try to kill the gangs started from the south entrance where the gatling gun is located.

Same here. It makes me frustrated. 2024 and it still hasn't been fixed.
