1. Cast fishing rod
2. Hit F a couple of times, so the reeling is super slow
3. Keep Space pressed to slowly drag your lure through the water, stop once a while
4. If you get a bite, move the rod in the opposite direction of where the fish is struggling
5. When the fish is tired, keep space pressed and hammer R to speed up the reeling, move your rod from left to right when reeling in
6. When the fish starts struggling again, keep Space pressed, but let go off the R key. This way you will hold the reel in place, but not reel the fish in.
(I think, I do this instinctively by now. But there definitely is a way to lock the reel in place.)
7. Once you are done with the struggling and reeling, just pick up the fish.
Point 6 of this list is what seems to be your problem, you don't really know how to just hold the reel in place when the fish struggles, from what I can gather from your description.
When you hold the reel in place the line won't break, only if you reel in while the fish struggles, and this way the fish won't pull the line back out.
Once you got this figured out it should be much easier to reel one of those big fishies in.
Sometimes I still snap the line because I hold the reel in place too long while the fish is struggling. This just takes time to get used to how much you do this. You'll have to get a feel for it because it's tricky.
That doesn't count as "caught", so it doesn't work for daily challenges like "5 Bluegill caught".
small, medium or big fish all are easy to get, frankly i love fishing in RDO, makes me a good profit too, 30 medium fishes go for 62-75 dollar depending why type it is and it only takes me en hour to get 30 of them.
i fish on keyboard and mouse, i don't use a controler so i don't know if fishing is harder with a controler.
After 40 minutes, loosing several after baiting them, i got pretty frustrated and on top of that, 2 idiots in a posse start fishing right next to me. Not even taking corona distance in account.
I don't think it needs much psychology to understand my reaction, but it included explosive ammo.
40 minutes?
It took me longer to ride to the river than to reel in the pike.
The thing bites a special river lure in under a minute, and reeling it in takes not longer than a minute either.
And that the line broke, that happened to me maybe 5-10 times, in all my playtime.
it never takes me longer than 3 minutes to get one.(river lures)

I'm just saying, if it takes you 40 minutes you are clearly doing something wrong.
best spot, just outside town van horn north side, got one in seconds of casting my lure.
