Legendary moose pelt gone

So I killed the legendary moose and brought the pelt to the Trapper. I tried selling to it him carrying the pelt, horse with the pelt, pelt on the ground, but it never showed up as an option to sell. I figured I'd go do a sidequest and see if that fixed things, then got killed by a cougar. Now the pelt isn't on my horse anymore, it's not in my inventory, and the Trapper doesn't have it. What do I do?

He does, it's automatically ^donated^ when you need it for crafting, if you dont use it for craft then its gone. The point is, you only lost money, whatever is you would need either the pelt of the antler its with the trapper or the fence.

I killed a 3 star moose in Tall Trees, skinned it and was on my way to camp when the horse I was riding was killed by hacker explosions, then I recovered the moose pelt only to have my second horse killed and me along with it. Bye-bye moose pelt...

I checked back in with the trapper, he doesn't have it and the legendary moose is crossed off on my map.

Really late, I know, but the same thing happened to me and u can’t spawn ledgendary animals in story mode, so it’s just gone unfortunately :(
