Boy in Rhodes Gunsmith's Basement - Complete after Finishing Main Story?
I completely missed this quest while doing the main story. I stumbled across a post about it, though, so I traveled back to Rhodes from Beecher's Hope (as John Marston, of course) and found the boy behind the basement bars. He pleaded with me to help him, so I went into the shop to confront the gunsmith.

However, when I enter the Gunsmith's shop, it doesn't provide me a "Rob" option in the right-click menu. I can't even draw my weapon in the shop with TAB. If I go behind the counter, he gets upset. I can attack him with fists but then the "WANTED" bar begins to flash and Marston doesn't demand him to open the basement door (as I've seen in YouTube videos with Arthur). Perhaps Marston can't free the boy?

I've tried putting on a face mask (the ones that you can buy from a fence), but the shop owner just complains that he cannot do business with me until I take the mask off. Also, I still have no right-click "Rob" menu option.

One other thing: I've noticed in YouTube videos that after speaking to the boy a message pops-up in the upper left stating that the user can now rob the gunsmith - but I do not receive that message at all.

Is it possible to complete this quest, post-epilogue/story? I certainly hope so, because I'd love to wrap it up if I can. How in the world do I trigger it as John Marston?

Appreciate any help you guys can offer.

Thanks,

Ron

There was another thread about this not so long ago. Unfortunately, it had no answers, and devolved into me having to try and convince people it was actually a thing. Some folks couldn't get past the "Just point yer weapon at the guy".

I still don't have a solution but it is a problem I encounter now and then. It seems to be hit and miss, perhaps it has something to do with the game mechanics and saving? I don't know. Perhaps shutting things down and then reloading would help? Otherwise, old fashioned trial and error seems to work out for me...eventually.

In my games, they seem to have made an effort to address this problem, since I can easily draw a weapon in a merchant's shop now? I just did the Gunsmith in Rhodes recently, and had a problem where the "rob" options didn't come up - he kept drawing his own weapon instead? Eventually, by standing in the right spot, and moving in the right way...I got it to work.

I wish you luck, sorry I don't have anything more useful to offer.

Thanks much for replying. I read similar posts where people replied with "just draw your gun" , etc, which is why I made a point in my OP to state exactly what I can/cannot do.

I'm wondering if it simply isn't an issue about the mission not working for John Marston in the post-epilogue. But that's nothing more than a theory.

I am going to go back and give it another shot, though. Wish me luck! If I do get things working, I'll post about it in here.

I FINALLY WAS ABLE TO SAVE THE GUY!

Unfortunately, I have no fool-proof "formula" that I can share with you, other than some old-fashioned trial & error with a HEAVY dose of patience.

This is what I did that worked for me....

1.) I saved them game right before I approached the guy in the basement at the side of the Gunsmith's shop, and then initiate the dialog with him.

2.) If a robbery attempt failed, I would reload, approach the captive, he would then plead for my help, and then I would enter the Gunsmith and try to rob him again. This usually ended in failure, but I would try again.

3.) On one of my MANY subsequent attempts, I finally received the "You can now rob the shop's side business" message! So I immediately saved my game. (Here's the message I'm referring to: https://imgur.com/a/2zkluFS)

4.) However... upon entering the shop after getting the message, I still could not draw my weapon! I could remove it from the holster, but I could not point my weapon at the man. It was as if my arm was locked mystically to my side. This was IMMENSELY frustrating.

5.) At one point, I decided to wait until the next morning and give it another shot. However, when I did that, I found the dreaded black "X" (for a dead body) showing up in the Gunsmith's basement. The guy had *died*. So I reloaded my "good" save and tried again. (This just made me all the more resolved to save the poor guy.)

6.) Finally - during a reloaded save - I talked to guy ("Mister, you gotta help me!"), walked into the shop, and I was able to drop my weapon, point it at the man! The game then gave me the "Rob" option (I believe it wanted me to hit "G" to initiate a robbery). That's when our dialog began, and I demanded that he show me what was in the basement.

This was a LOT more work than it should have been, but I'm just glad to get this done. I'm trying to get as many honor points for John as possible, since he's going on the straight and narrow now.

Basically - if you're having this same issue - don't give up, and keep doing what I outlined above. Hopefully it will finally yield a success for you, too.

Good luck!

Ron

I believe I've found a solution, in case anybody is still struggling with this "bug". After having talked at least once with the guy in the basement, draw your gun BEFORE entering the shop, then enter the shop (your gun should remain in your hand), and point it at the gunsmith with right-click (focus). You'll then get the Rob the basement option appear.

If you look at the onscreen queues - after you right click to Rob, you left click to pull the weapon - then if you wait until the Drama in the Basement is over, The Gunsmith will be in tears and you'll have the Lancaster and can rob the cash register on your way out and no one can see what you're doing - but the Gunsmith probably knows it was YOU - and you have to put up with his diatribe for the next 6 months.

The BEST guy to Rob is the Gunsmith in St. Denis.
After that he 'Watches you like a Buzzard' and it's worth robbing him just for that...lol
