Does the game still require the Rockstar launcher?
I am not a fan of having to install a bazillion launchers for every game i play,
Most of those launchers have very questionable and shady policies and bloat the user's PC.
My question is Does the game still require the Rockstar launcher?

It will stay this way because GTA 5 has this thing too.

Rockstar is a developer platform for Rockstar, just like Uplay for Ubisoft, Origin for EA, Battlenet for Blizzard and even Epic before the exclusives deals.
Steam, GoG, Epic and other smaller ones are multideveloper platforms where they can publish their games and where we get to choose where to centralise our collections of games.
I don't see a problem with this.

Totally agree with the OP and I'm pissed off about it.

I paid $10 more on steam (its on sale elsewhere) because I thought I would be able to avoid this crap.

Welcome to "The Social Club" because your discored, your steam friends, your Epic launcher, Your Xbox console companion aren't enough ... you NEED MORE BS.

...And its rubbish bullcrap. I had to play the captcha game 10 times as I tried to find a yet another alias for yet another launcher/social entity. Then...once you do manage to get playing online, you have to endure a ♥♥♥♥ ton of cut scenes and forced story line before you can join any friends.

They actually force you to join up with a stranger... online and complete a mission before you can join up w/ anyone on your friends list. ridiculous.

The extra launcher is indeed ♥♥♥♥♥♥♥♥ but it will forever be part of this game I am afraid, cause what I have read somewhere, the launcher is part of Rockstar's new DRM. So the launcher is not going anywhere I am afraid.

If you think it's OK that every game requires a new launcher to install then be my guest and enjoy the spyware and bloatware...

Pirates always find a way to bypass those DRMs,and then while we have DRM related problems pirates enjoy games without them.
The Witcher 3 was released DRM-less and is a huge success...Proving that DRMs are not necessary.

A distribution platform is still needed, in this case Steam or GoG.
And then CD Projekt might decide they're better off with not paying distribution and make their own launcher.
Also, we're in 2020, you can spare the RAM.

If Rockstar is going to allow Steam to digitally distribute your product, and Steam has a robust social network in place (Friends, Chat, Forums, Workshop etc) why do I need to sign up for Rockstars launcher and "Social Club" (which I will never use)?

I lost count of how many times I had to play the "click all images with streetlights" captcha game as I struggled to find yet another account name that wasn't already taken. Its not about ram. I love steam because it consolidates all this nonsense. I bought the game on steam for my nephew and myself despite it being on sale from another digital distributor because I didn't want to add another launcher/account to my already long (and growing list) of launchers.

From this point forward anytime I buy a game on steam and it requires me to register with yet another launcher/social entity I will just immediately request a refund.

That you don't "see what the problem is" just means you shouldn't be on this thread.

GOG is owned by CD Projekt Red. And you don't need the GOG launcher to run the game. Once you've downloaded the game from the website, you can install and run it without any launcher.

DRM doesn't use just RAM,It uses CPU resources too,
And we all know how CPU intensive RDR 2 is - and the DRM is not helping with that,It just makes it worse.
Also loading times are affected too.
And it also affects stability - Don't you remember the launcher and DRM problems that you RDR 2 players faced on launch?,
Paying customers could not play the game because of it.
And what will happen when the DRM servers are down temporarily or permanently?

Also there is the whole thing of Spying, tracking, collecting data and anti-consumer practice in many stores.

RDR2 is not at all CPU intensive, my 16 threads barely register 10-15%.
GPU on the other hand takes a heavy toll.
"If you have 6 or more CPU cores in your PC, Red Dead Redemption 2 should run flawlessly - but if not, you could be pushing 100% CPU usage and the game will freeze, stutter, drop frames, or crash"
