Game launches on wrong monitor
Hey guys,

Got an issue with RDR2, it keeps launching on the wrong monitor and in the settings I can't change the monitor either.

Basically I have 3 screens and RDR insists on launching on my left monitor instead of the center one.

The center one is my main monitor in the windows screen settings and I've also tried launching RDR in "windowed borderless" and then hitting SHIFT+WIN+Right Key to force it to move monitor, but it just switches back to the left one automatically.

When I launch RDR in windowed mode and drag the game window to the main monitor, it crashes the game.

When I change the monitor number in the settings xml in the Users/.../RDR folder, it does nothing either.

I've also got the latest drivers for my NVIDIA card installed.

Anyone know how to fix this issue?

I finally solved this problem on my PC. The main monitor was not plugged in to the NVIDIA video card and this is what RDR2 was connecting to. Once I swapped the connections around the problem was solved, If you are using a video card open up it's settings and see which monitor is it's connected to.

Thank you so much - I'm a jackass. I was having this issue and realized my main monitor wasn't connected to 2080 Super. Seriously... fail.

Same issue here, the only way to set it correctly is to modify the settings in the My Doc / RS games/RDR2/ settings.

The problem is...
Windows labels screens 1, 2, 3.
RDR labels screens 0, 1, 2.

If game starts on screen 2 (windows) you need to set it to 1 through game graphics options.
Close game and open the settings file in My Docs, scroll down and set the output monitor to screen 0.
Use the "modify" option (not open) and save.

This only works until the game does a system check, then you need to go through the whole setup again.

Or, you can just let the game load and change the screen N°.

So in game, screen is 0 (that's how it works for me).

Might help, might not.
Have a nice trot.
Your description of your fix is entirely unhelpful and left me entirely confused on what you did.

Yes and also whenever you choose a screen that is not 0, the game crashes. Moving the window (because it starts windowed) with ctrl + shift + arrow crashes the game as well. Can't change res because it's greyed out. Can't change screen because it crashes. Can't set full screen because it won't go full screen.

I had the same multimonitor setup when I played it back in 2019-2020 whatever and I don't remember such a fuss with it, everything was fine.

If you open steam on your orimary monitor/monitor of your choice and open big picture mode you can play rdr2 on that monitor
I had the same problem

i fixed it by getting a extra display port adapter because my graphics card has all display ports except for 1 hdmi port.

ALWAYS connect ALL Displays to the dedicated GPU card. :steamfacepalm:

Since you have a Laptop it might not be possible; just toggle game to windowed mode and move the window, then toggle it back again. Not a big deal.
