Game launches on wrong monitor
Hey guys,

Got an issue with RDR2, it keeps launching on the wrong monitor and in the settings I can't change the monitor either.

Basically I have 3 screens and RDR insists on launching on my left monitor instead of the center one.

The center one is my main monitor in the windows screen settings and I've also tried launching RDR in "windowed borderless" and then hitting SHIFT+WIN+Right Key to force it to move monitor, but it just switches back to the left one automatically.

When I launch RDR in windowed mode and drag the game window to the main monitor, it crashes the game.

When I change the monitor number in the settings xml in the Users/.../RDR folder, it does nothing either.

I've also got the latest drivers for my NVIDIA card installed.

Anyone know how to fix this issue?

(In context of windows 7 but should still work similarly)

Right click your desktop and open the monitor settings, should be under screen resolution. Make sure your main monitor is in the middle of the other two.

You can also try looking in the laptop power settings and tell it to turn off the laptop monitor when an external monitor is connected.

in game > settings > Graphics > Output monitor > select ur main monitor.
also try full screen? i have 2 monitors and dont have this issue.

may help to delete the previous .xml file and verify files through steam to get ur defaults back. depending on how much this game uses the cloud.

So you have multiple monitors connected to your laptop? I'm trying to understand your setup.

Yes, I have my laptop screen on the right, a main monitor in the middle and another monitor on the left, so 3 monitors in total including the laptop screen.

open game
go settings/graphics
change fullscreen and resulution(1920x1080 or anyway whats your primary monitor resulution)
and save it

and again go settings/graphics
scroll down
open advanced settings
and change vulkan to directx12
save it

restart your game
game should be open with your primary screen

**and when you change your graphic api (directx12) u can change any monitor you have but I dont recommended this because when you change monitor game stack at 1fps

I can not select Graphics API, it's greyed out on Vulkan while I have a NVIDIA card in my laptop(GTX880M 8GB).

Also, both "Output Adapter" and "Output Monitor" are greyed out as well, can not select or change anything there either.

did you get this figured out

Same issue here, the only way to set it correctly is to modify the settings in the My Doc / RS games/RDR2/ settings.

The problem is...
Windows labels screens 1, 2, 3.
RDR labels screens 0, 1, 2.

If game starts on screen 2 (windows) you need to set it to 1 through game graphics options.
Close game and open the settings file in My Docs, scroll down and set the output monitor to screen 0.
Use the "modify" option (not open) and save.

This only works until the game does a system check, then you need to go through the whole setup again.

Or, you can just let the game load and change the screen N°.

So in game, screen is 0 (that's how it works for me).

Might help, might not.
Have a nice trot.

I will give that a go to see if it helps, thanks!

I finally solved this problem on my PC. The main monitor was not plugged in to the NVIDIA video card and this is what RDR2 was connecting to. Once I swapped the connections around the problem was solved, If you are using a video card open up it's settings and see which monitor is it's connected to.

That is a good tip, I'll see!

Changing Output Monitor in windowless fullscreen had no effect for me. If I change it to straight fullscreen, then the Output Monitor option worked. The number doesn't appear to be related to the id from Windows though. Fortunately I only have one high refresh rate monitor, so it was easy to identify.
Also, if you're having problems with Vulkan VS DX12 being greyed out, make sure to unlock advanced options.
Hope that helps anyone else who finds this thread.

The game only sees monitors directly connected to the laptop. If you connect a monitor using a usb docking station it will not be detected by the game.

Hey did you ever find a solution I have the same setup and same problem
I have a similar problem, but my game will only launch if there is another monitor present. It refuses to launch on my laptop monitor. I bought this game just so I could play it with some chick but I kinda want to return it now.
