Just wait until they add new stuff that got an even higher price, then you're almost forced to buy gold bars or grind ingame 24/7 ;)
That's how GTA V is now.
in GTA V there are 3 ways to earn enough money to buy stuff

1: grind like it's a job but you have to work over 20 hours each day
2: use your moms creditcard to buy money
3: hack.

I just had a quick look and the payment is done via Steam (I didn't buy anything). When you click on store in the game and select the amount of gold, it will open up the social club interface but when you click on checkout it opens up the steam overlay for you to pay via your steam wallet. So the payment itself can be done via Steam.

When I checked that, the store interface just said "we can't find any items matching your criteria". Doesn't matter if I try to select different options, it doesn't show me anything.

OT: When you buy the gold from the ingame store you can just pay with your steam wallet. I bought some for the trader role in preparation for the moonshiner update next week without problems.

You can buy them within the game, which directs you to steam to make the purchase. The gold isn't directly available in steam as some dlc or what have you.

Just pick collector role, collect all the collectible and sell all the sets for whopping 4500 $, fill gold bar by doing daily objective compounded with bounty hunter role.
