How to play free aim lobbies in Red Dead Online

There are different type of lobbies in RDO:
1) Aim assist lobbies (normal and narrow)
In these lobbies people who use controllers are given aim assist and aim assist in this game is aimbot it will glue reticle to enemy no matter what. If you're casual player and want to play with controller it may be ok for you, but if you're using keyboard and mouse you're putting yourself in massive disadvantage playing online pvp and pve coop.

2) Free aim lobbies
In these lobbies there's no any aim assist. Players with controllers will not have any advantage (you can say that they are at disadvantage in these lobbies) in aiming.

Unfortunaly for keyboard and mouse users game is flawed on PC and will put you in aim assist lobbies by default effectively gimping your pvp online performance if you decide to stay in these "normal" lobbies because you will be fighting against players who can lock on you and kill you in 1 second. Option to change aim setting is nor promted on launch and hidden in controller setting, so average Joe who don't have a controller probably will not ever look there. However it's really simple to switch your aim settings.

Making your game free aim:

1)Go to Controls in the main menu. Important note here: you should do it in story mode or in right after entering the game otherwise aim settings cannot be changed.

2)Go to Controller settings

3) Change BOTH aim settings from Normal to Free Aim.

And that's it. Now you will be placed only against players who use free aim.

Someone please copy that and make it to steam guides. I own game at Rockstar Launcher and cannot post guide here myself.

Thank you for this. I was wondering why I was getting massacred in PvP. I'm not very good at GTAO's pvp, but not that bad either, rather average. Still in RDRO I was absolutely getting murdered and was convinced some of the shooting wasn't even possible without aimbot. Was really driving me nuts, until I discovered I was in mixed sessions and some people were actually aimbotting :p ... The few kills I got was probably against fellow free aimers who have no idea they're in sessions that allow lockon. I feel like free-aim should be the default option in the PC version: any auto-aim enthusiast will immediately notice being in a free-aim session, while free-aimers will have no idea they're in an auto-aim session.

Btw someone already posted it in guides and didn't give you any credit. Pretty sure he used your text and changed it up a little to make it look like he didn't. Text is way too similar. But I guess as long as it gets people into free-aim session it's good.

Do you know what the „paint it in black“ is ?

For me this is the ultra auto aim that gives every Controller or PC player the ultra auto aim.

I would love to have lobbies without auto aim or „paint it in black“ perk

I didn't change anything in options for aim other than tweaking sensitivity.

My friend when he joined me said it was 'free aim' (the message he got).

So, I don't know how I got there, but apparently I am in free aim ... (never felt the 'tug' of console aim assist).

I knew something seemed odd when I played a showdown for the first time when I'm using a KB/M and kept getting one shot even though I was constantly on the move.

Will definitely be switching this to free aim to get a more enjoyable experience, thanks!

Man that's really stupid. They should really keep these kind of things out of multiplayer. And perhaps even out of the game entirely. GTA SA and GTA IV were just fine without CJ and Niko having mutant abilities, this is not a Marvel game.
Completely agree with you that we need true free aim lobbies, without this rubbish.

If in those settings it says free aim, and it is greyed out, you should be in free aim. However I'm not entirely sure. Because there is a Shoutout Series (Free Aim) and regular Shootoutseries, but only regular Takeover Series on my starting screen. Don't think I've ever seen Takeover Series (Free Aim), I'll have to pay attention to it next time I play.

Players who are playing on free aim servers but using paint it black should not complain about aim assist. There is a reason behind the idea providing controller players aim assist. All console games have that. Aim assist is not = aim bot. There is still a inaccuracy built in.

I don't have any problem playing against other controller players using aim assist at all.

I don't see any good reason why someone would choose mous and keyboard over conroller in Rdr2.

Rdr2 is build with controller in mind. It's a 3. Person game.

I dont' think you can play free aim vs controller users with aim assist on. It feels that way, like the guy that headshot me with 1 shot 10 times in a row in a pvp event.

I connected a controller to see how it was, while in a free aim free roam online, and could not set the aim assist options in settings (said I had to join a different kind of free roam).

It is not a hacker with aimbot
It is simply the perk/ability „paint it in black „
, nothing else :-)

This makes the game more common /simple
And attracts more players that are not that good in shooters. So all those bad players are happy this is the only Game they can do headshots with a legal aimbot perk and buying this game.

I would agree with tc04 looking at paint it black abillity on it self that would be using an aim bot. But you could counter it with a different abillity card. Thats how that works in rdr2. More or less. The point I wanted to bring accross was that if someone like to play on a free aim server but than have to use paint it black to get some kills defeats the purpose beeing on free aim servers to begin with. If that's not the case than simple counter it with slippery for example. Rdr2 is not a soly fps game the skills that you need moved away from aiming to other areas. (Speed, timeing, smart choices in combat, using right weapons and so on). I recorded a video to prove my point. And that is still enjoyable.
